I am actually writing this for my son who read this book in fifth grade. He LOVED it! A lot of the material is things he had really never thought about and it led to some very interestng family conversations about the China one-child policy, etc.
I read this book once ago as it was an assigned book in middle school loved it then didn't quite live up to my memory of when I first read it but what ever does? Just a shame the rest of the series isn't in audiobook form. I was hoping to go through the whole series as I believe I only made it as far as the second book when I was first exposed to this series. Will likely buy it on Amazon so I guess they get my money either way aha. Narrator was alright his 'alternate' voices for Jen or Luke's mother were at times laughable but that didn't take me away from the story too much.
This was a very well written book but also very sad. I would not recommend this book to the faint hearted because while you grow to like some of the characters they end up parsing and leaving you heart broken.
Futurestic, Sad, Hopeful
The friendship that develops between Jen and Luke...the Shawdow Children.
How he went out on limb to help and protect his daughter, that wasn't even his biological daughter and to fight the Government. Then he gave Luke the chance at an actual life.
When Luke met Jen's Dad and they grieved over their loss. Jen's Dad gave Luke the life he would have never been able to have unless he had met Jen and listened to her wisdom.
I teach 6th grade and used this in my language arts class. My kids loved the story and immediately wanted to read the rest of the series. It is a great book to discuss current events (China's one child policy) and inspires students to read other stories.
Great story. Simple quick read for adults. Great novels for middle school!
