Editorial reviews

Editors Select, October 2013 - Speculative fiction has emerged as the most popular subgenre of YA literature in the last decade or so, helping to patently defeat the dire predictions that kids these days just wouldn't care about books. Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy has become an almost iconic addition to this cannon. Insurgent, Book Two in the series, ended with an M. Night Shyamalan-worthy twist that has kept me and the other fans here at Audible biting our nails - making the arrival of Allegiant all the more exciting. Luckily, Emma Galvin, probably the best YA voice talent going today, returns to narrate along with a surprise male co-narrator chosen by a fan-vote. I hate to state the obvious but if you were sucked in by The Hunger Games series (and come on you know you were) then you need to check out Divergent. And to top things off, it's about to be a blockbuster movie. Emily, Audible Editor

Some may not like it. I didn't at first. Then I accepted it as a good end. Life isn't just rainbows and puppies. Sad endings are a part of life too.

Excellent Conclusion!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would definitely recommend this book! I do not understand why so many are giving it a negative review. Veronica Roth does an excellent job keeping the suspense building through the book. It was a great ending to the series- granted it may not have been the ending we all wanted and hoped for, but nonetheless it wrapped everything up and gave closure.

What about Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford ’s performance did you like?

I enjoyed both performances. At times I hated the characters, loved the characters, and in the end wept with them.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

Ignore the negative review - this conclusion is worth reading/listening too.

Fave of the series!

Would you consider the audio edition of Allegiant to be better than the print version?

Always is!

What other book might you compare Allegiant to and why?

This series is comparable to Hunger Games...but not as good...

Which character – as performed by Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford – was your favorite?

Of course Tris, And Four....lol

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Well since they already are, I think we know....lol

Any additional comments?

Ok...I must say this was not one of my fave series..and I was hesitant to say the least to listen to this last book, but I am very glad I did...This was my absolute favorite of the series..it kept my interest from beginning to end and was wonderful...I knew going in that Tris ends up with her fate and I still loved it...it was touching and beautiful and as the ending line states...yes... people can help heal people....Good book and Great end to an interesting series...I love the movie also and cant wait for movie 2! I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys this genre..and give it a thumbs up!

Sad ending to a wonderful trilogy

Would you try another book from Veronica Roth and/or Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford ?

Yes, I loved the author and the narrator. I would definitely read another book of Veronia Roth and listen to Emma Galvin again.

What was most disappointing about Veronica Roth’s story?

The whole book was very slow which was completely different compared to the first two books. Even though the ending was "realistic" I did not care for it. I like to have my fairy tale, happily every after endings.

What does Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Emma Galvin is so wonderful to listen to. I read the books and listened to them and I prefer to listen to her vs. read them. She brings them more to life.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I plan on seeing all the moives

A fitting yet heart wrenching end!

What made the experience of listening to Allegiant the most enjoyable?

I was nearly on the edge of my seat waiting for this book to finally arrive, and though I was not finished with another book, I nearly stopped it right there just to begin this one. I didn't however, and made myself patiently wait. I must say it was worth it! I loved this book just as much as the first two in the series. I enjoyed the narration as well - it was so nice to have a voice for Four.

What other book might you compare Allegiant to and why?

The whole series flows so well you could listen to them all back to back and not feel you missed a beat! Divergent and Insurgent were both so well written, the antisipation for this one was difficult. I actually read the first two for a second time this summer just to refresh my memory for this one.

What about Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford ’s performance did you like?

They were both wonderful narrators and actors. I loved Emma on the first two books and I feel she did both Tris and Four very well. She has great reach with multifple characters and it feels like you are standing beside her watching the book in action. Aaron took on the Four roll and dynamically injected the exact tone that Four would have right away! It was like he caught the ball in mid flight and ran with it. I liked them both equally well.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely!

Any additional comments?

Wonderful job on the series! Most authors complete a series on a happy or sad note. For me this was both and I have to say I was pleasently surprised - didn't see it coming.

Compelling - An Excellent Conclusion!

Where does Allegiant rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's definitely up there. Having two narrators made it so effective - props to the producers for making that effort. There haven't been many audiobooks that I've read that come alive like this one.

What did you like best about this story?

My favorite part of this was Roth's observations and descriptions about how young people relate to each other and the world around them. She has an almost John Green-esque way of putting emotions so exactly right into words that it's stunning. YES, the ending is completely unexpected, but we can't always have stories with the prescribed endings that everyone is prepared for — that's not life! Yes, Roth could have finished this story the way everyone expected her to, but I find it so much more compelling and REAL the way that she wraps things up.

Life isn't neat and tidy and expected like a lot of people want the end of this book to be. The edges aren't always clean — often life leaves us jagged, broken, and unstable. Veronica Roth stays true to that, and she gives us a story that exposes the real way that people handle morality, love, forgiveness, and healing.

Have you listened to any of Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've heard Emma Galvin's performances of "Divergent" and "Insurgent" and this stacks up. Both Emma and Aaron do a great job in this as Tris and Tobias.

Good but but didnt pack the punch I needed

Any additional comments?

The book is a love / hate relationship in my mind. it evolved and changed into what I felt was an ending that worked and didn't work in my mind in the same time. If you have read the first two books, then it is defiantly worth listening. Stay steady and make it to the end and you will understand what it is all about.
