Editorial reviews

Editors Select, October 2013 - Speculative fiction has emerged as the most popular subgenre of YA literature in the last decade or so, helping to patently defeat the dire predictions that kids these days just wouldn't care about books. Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy has become an almost iconic addition to this cannon. Insurgent, Book Two in the series, ended with an M. Night Shyamalan-worthy twist that has kept me and the other fans here at Audible biting our nails - making the arrival of Allegiant all the more exciting. Luckily, Emma Galvin, probably the best YA voice talent going today, returns to narrate along with a surprise male co-narrator chosen by a fan-vote. I hate to state the obvious but if you were sucked in by The Hunger Games series (and come on you know you were) then you need to check out Divergent. And to top things off, it's about to be a blockbuster movie. Emily, Audible Editor

Reluctant to write this review

First, the good: Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford are outstanding as narrators. I was already a fan of Emma Galvin, but Aaron Standord particularly impressed me. Well done.

Now, the rest: I pre-ordered Allegiant back in February. I loved the previous two books in the series, and to say that I eagerly awaited the conclusion to the trilogy is an understatement. So, now that I have finally finished listening to Allegiant, I am left feeling dissatisfied.

Veronica Roth showed such promise with Divergent and Insurgent that my expectations for Allegiant were high. She is a good writer but, at times, it seemed like new plot lines introduced in Allegiant weren't fully fleshed out, leaving me frustrated, and some of them seemed wholly unnecessary. I don't see what the Nita subplot added to the story, other than introduce an unlikable character who didn't advance the plot. The more I listened to the book, the more I wondered why Veronica Roth took such care to build her world in Divergent and Insurgent, only to completely change direction in Allegiant in such a rushed fashion. Underdeveloped is the word that kept coming to mind.

It's also really hard to write this review without revealing The Big Spoiler, so I'll just keep referring to it as The Big Spoiler. And it did spoil the book for me. Some of my favourite books end in a similar manner, so it's not the actual event that upset me. What upset me is the way it was delivered. It was rushed. It seemed out of place. It wasn't justified at that point in the story. I saw it coming a few chapters before it happened, but I kept listening, hoping I was wrong or, at the very least, that Veronica Roth would knock it out of the ballpark and redeem its occurrence. But that didn't happen and it was the tipping point for me.

Overall, I think this story would have been better handled spread out over two books. Two books would have given the author the time to develop the new ideas and plots she introduced in Allegiant, and The Big Spoiler wouldn't have seemed so out of place. She could have worked with it and made us understand why it was necessary to the story. As it is, I finished the book, deleted it from my iPod, and I doubt I'll ever listen to it again.

Surely this can't be the end? Really?

I am sad, so sad. I anticipated this book for what seemed like forever. To struggle and struggle and grow into such a beautiful person and it ends like that. It may have been reality, but that is not why I read books.
Is the book well written? Yes.
Does it have great character development? Yes.
I'm I depressed after reading the 3rd book? Yes!
I have nothing else to say :(

There could've been an abridged version for this.

I had so many reasons to dislike this book. It was a real disappointment for me. I just kept going because I wanted to the what end V.R. had given to this amazing story(in the beginning). Below are some of the reasons why I didn't like it:
1st - not at all what I expected. For the end of a trilogy you want the grand finale to be really grand, magnificent, and it WASN'T! AT ALL! It was small and not creative. I would give it 1,5 stars because half way through the book I couldn't stop listening. I was curious about the end - and then, disappointed.

2nd - The author spent so much time making Tobias, my favorite character, whiny and petty, that I started disliking him. Tobias spent half the book crying whining about something pointless. In the first two books he was so strong, so confident... In this one he is so immature and so teenage like that I disliked him so many times I cannot even count.

3rd - TOO LONG! An abridged version could have done the job just fine.

4th - Too much contradiction for one book.

5th - Explanations given throughout the book + the end make me think that ALL the suffering was in vain because of the constant contradiction. Plain pointless.

6th - I know that sometimes you must kill off a character so there is more emotion to the plot and the story, but you don't kill off the main character and make it seem like the sacrifice was in vain.

7th - V.R. should have ended this book with Insurgent. Alliegiant didn't have a real reason to exist. If you get around to finishing the book you will see why.

Wow

What made the experience of listening to Allegiant the most enjoyable?

It's life plain and simple this is what a book is supposed to do transport you and allow you to feel every emotion that the character is feeling.

What other book might you compare Allegiant to and why?

A little similar to hunger games

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Just read it. The answer to this question is the same for everybody

Any additional comments?

I read the reviews before purchasing this book and I saw a lot about how upset everybody was it all ends and some even talking about how four transforms into a weak person. These people I don't think know what it's like to be in a similar situation. Every action and mood he experiences is very close if not dead on to what you or I would go through. You can't stop after 2. read it. It's no spoiler yes it is sad yes you will most likely cry but it's amazing. Do I like how it ended no but I do love the book and will recommend it

It made think!

Ok, all of the reviews I have read have been disappointed in this book and yes I am sad that the ending was not HEA, but I feel the author was leading up to this all along. It made me think about standing up for what I believe is right and not backing down. It's easy to stand on the side lines and let other people do the dirty work. Just think if no one took chances and tried to change things during the american revolution we wouldn't live in this great country today. War is sacrifice and war sucks but thank god there are people out there willing to give up there lives for the greater good. I was balling at the end of this book but I in no way felt cheated. Tris did not want to die, nobody does, but her courage inspires me and I think that was the message here. We all want a happy ending but sometimes thats just not the way it is. There are people out there today just like Tris, I honor and respect them and thank them for there service because after all- Tris was a soldier. God bless our soldiers and God bless America!!

SPOILER ALERT

Some may not like it. I didn't at first. Then I accepted it as a good end. Life isn't just rainbows and puppies. Sad endings are a part of life too.

Excellent Conclusion!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would definitely recommend this book! I do not understand why so many are giving it a negative review. Veronica Roth does an excellent job keeping the suspense building through the book. It was a great ending to the series- granted it may not have been the ending we all wanted and hoped for, but nonetheless it wrapped everything up and gave closure.

What about Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford ’s performance did you like?

I enjoyed both performances. At times I hated the characters, loved the characters, and in the end wept with them.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

Ignore the negative review - this conclusion is worth reading/listening too.
