Editorial reviews

Editors Select, October 2013 - Speculative fiction has emerged as the most popular subgenre of YA literature in the last decade or so, helping to patently defeat the dire predictions that kids these days just wouldn't care about books. Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy has become an almost iconic addition to this cannon. Insurgent, Book Two in the series, ended with an M. Night Shyamalan-worthy twist that has kept me and the other fans here at Audible biting our nails - making the arrival of Allegiant all the more exciting. Luckily, Emma Galvin, probably the best YA voice talent going today, returns to narrate along with a surprise male co-narrator chosen by a fan-vote. I hate to state the obvious but if you were sucked in by The Hunger Games series (and come on you know you were) then you need to check out Divergent. And to top things off, it's about to be a blockbuster movie. Emily, Audible Editor

Too violent, but compelling

Any additional comments?

I picked Divergent from the audible.com listing without knowing about the movie or anything else about it, including that it was a young adult series. My first impression was that it was a too violent, dystopian story like Hunger Games. And it is. And, like Hunger Games, I couldn't quit until I'd read the whole trilogy straight through. Unlike Hunger Games, it stays in my mind several days after I finished it. I can't explain why.

A variation in the narrator's tone would be nice

Any additional comments?

The narration for this book was very annoying to me - her cadence made it seem as though there were a lot more periods and colons than were written and I think the intent was lost many times because of this.

Best one yet

I have to say that I have gotten tired of the 16 to 23-year-old save in the world stories. I wasn't really sure I wanted to listen to this book but did before the movie came out. I'm glad I did. This Book was the deepest and most heartfelt of the series. I'm very very glad I made the decision to listen.

I have mixed feelings about book 3

I can't say I liked the back and fourth between Tris and Tobias yet, based on the story I get why it's that way. I thought there was great character development for both characters for a while yet then there was digression as well. There are some twists not necessarily expected, while other times a little predictable. Some of the story left you hanging almost. It wasn't bad, yet it could have been better. Almost seemed like a rushed shock and awe, and therefore came out poorly planned and a bit of a let down. The book ended and I literally said, "that's it?".

Pretty good but not great for reasons I explain

Any additional comments?

I am in agreement with pretty much everyone that reviewed the third book in regards to being disappointed with the ending. I am actually absolutely new to this series and bought all three audio books this week and just finished the third one today. The first two books were very good and drew me into the story and the plot and the characters to the point to where you have an emotional attachment to each one, which I believe is a result of a well written book. However, I do not agree with the majority that say that the third book was awful and isn't worth reading. I thought that the third book is definitely worth reading simply because it brings the story to a close, however disappointing it is. My disappointment isn't merely in the author who chose to close the story the way she did or the writing being subpar compared to the previous two. My disappointment is just a result of the emotional attachment to the main characters that drew me into the story and me wishing that it would have ended a different way than it did. Of course we all would love books and movies and stories to end with everyone happy and in love and loved. Unfortunately if every book had a happy ending there wouldn't be a point to reading any story because we would all know that everything would be ok in the end. My advice to anyone reading my review is to simply read or listen to the audio book and make the choice on your own whether you like it or not. At most you will enjoy reading the book even though the ending is sad, and at the least you will have an ending to the story so you won't always think about what could have been or what will be with the characters of Divergent.

Disappointed

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Change the ending.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was mad

Any additional comments?

I'm giving this book a 3.5.

I don't even know where to start. It wasn't the Epic conclusion I was hoping for.

Have the tissues ready

Where does Allegiant rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's about in the middle. It is a wonderful story, and is performed well. I will go back and listen to it multiple times. But I don't think I'll listen to it obsessively like I have other books. I appreciated the exploration of more serious topics and the not-so-cookie-cutter ending.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Four, because of the emotional journey and trials he had to face. I loved getting to hear the story from his perspective. It added so much more to the story than we would have gotten from just a single point of view.

Have you listened to any of Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I had not heard any of their performances, but they did an excellent job. Some of the characters were portrayed differently by each, but it honestly added to the book as it emphasized their different way of perceiving the world and everyone around them.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The ending. I don't want to give spoilers, but I blubbered like a baby for the last hour and a half, and then continued crying while I tried to explain to my husband WHY I was unable to stop. Not many books can bring out that reaction.

Any additional comments?

This is not your typical happy ending teen book. It delves into more serious topics and leaves you wishing that it had ended in a more predictable way. But it's worth listening to, and you would be missing out on a great story if you pass it by.
