Editorial reviews

Editors Select, October 2013 - Speculative fiction has emerged as the most popular subgenre of YA literature in the last decade or so, helping to patently defeat the dire predictions that kids these days just wouldn't care about books. Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy has become an almost iconic addition to this cannon. Insurgent, Book Two in the series, ended with an M. Night Shyamalan-worthy twist that has kept me and the other fans here at Audible biting our nails - making the arrival of Allegiant all the more exciting. Luckily, Emma Galvin, probably the best YA voice talent going today, returns to narrate along with a surprise male co-narrator chosen by a fan-vote. I hate to state the obvious but if you were sucked in by The Hunger Games series (and come on you know you were) then you need to check out Divergent. And to top things off, it's about to be a blockbuster movie. Emily, Audible Editor

The popularity of Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games trilogy and its film adaptations has paved the way for so many great dystopian books and series in YA, imagining harrowing worlds where teens must fight for survival and define what life means to them. The enduring popularity of the series has proven that dystopian stories and the sometimes-dark futures they imagine are endlessly fascinating to our imaginations.

awesome trilogy

I refuse to see the movies as I know they'll do no justice.
time to move on now...

Spoiler Alert...

Disappointed with this ending! I guess if the heroine of this book actually survived it might be like she was copying "too" closely to the Hunger Games Trilogy but I grew really fond of Tris and believe she should have had a chance to live life post the wars and chose.

Great listen

Would you listen to Allegiant again? Why?

I liked how each chapter was narrated by either Emma or Aaron, depending on who's point of view the author was writing from. When I read the book it was a little more difficult to remember who's point of view it was. IT is a great love story with a surprise ending.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tris of course. She seamed to be the most well rounded and real.

Which scene was your favorite?

Not going to say, I think if I write it here it will be a big spoiler.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

spoiler, so not writing it here

Any additional comments?

Great story, plenty of surprises to make it a "page turner".

Not the ending we all hoped for...

Would you try another book from Veronica Roth and/or Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford ?

Emma Galvin is one of my favorite narrators, and Veronica Roth remains a favorite author despite my dislike of the ending to her trilogy. Aaron Stanford was not a narrator that I personally liked, and I wish that Emma Galvin had narrated the entire story as with the other books (although I understand, of course, why they didn't do this).

Was Allegiant worth the listening time?

After the time invested in the previous books (multiple listenings), it definitely was.

Any additional comments?

Like just about every other reader, I didn't find the ending of the Divergent trilogy to be what I expected or hoped for. It seems that the dystopian genre sets itself up for trouble in that very engaging and dangerous worlds are easy to create--but not so easy to wrap up nicely by the end of a three-book series. Not only was the direction of the plot not what I was hoping for, but Allegiant seemed less focused than the previous books, perhaps because of the introduction of so many new characters. Overall, it wasn't what I personally was looking for, but it's important to remember that when you read a book, it's on the author's terms. It's their world, and ultimately, you can either take it or leave it.

Mediocre

Just ok. Characters are one dimensional. Good for the youths but a bit too farcical for young adults

Excellent Finish

Satisfying to the last. The Trilogy continues to develop while exploring the main themes. Narration uses male and female voices in a unique way.

A little dragged out, but I liked it!!

I am not like other people. I actually don't relish the typical happy endings. Life is not a happy ending! Shit happens, a lot of it, a lot of the time. Hence I gave up on the happily ever after a very very long time ago. Having said that the ending in this book was not a complete surprise. I was expecting it in part. I had a feeling from the time I read Divergent that some main character is going to get killed off. What surprised me a little bit was who it was. I liked it! I get why people are upset but I think it was a somewhat realistic outcome.

I liked the shifts on POV. A lot of YA books I have read are mostly from a girl's perspective. Reading this from the guy's perspective was a nice relief. It really gave a glimpse into what Tobias really thought. About his vulnerabilities and doubts.

Finally the story overall could have been shorter. I feel some things were unnecessarily drawn out. Themes that were over explained, and dragged out. Overall I liked the book. It is definitely not the best dystopian series I have read, hunger games takes that hands down, but its an entertaining read. Worth reading at least once.

Wow! What a let down.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Not if they are a big fan of the first two books. It would have been better to stop at Insurgent. The ending is very disappointing and I have not run across anyone who has liked it.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The most interesting was the compound story. The least interesting was the ending.

What about Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford ’s performance did you like?

The narration performances were fine.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Of course it is too long to listen to in one sitting. The Divergent, Insurgent and even some of Allegiant were interesting enough to listen to for very long periods of time.

Any additional comments?

I have been a big fan of the Divergent story and I was even a fan of it through most of Allegiant. But, I can help but state that, I HATE THAT ENDING!!!!!!!!! I have been excited to see both of the Divergent and Insurgent movies. But I have no drive to see Allegiant when and if it comes out. So let down!

Way better than I thought

It was good to return to this world of tris. The readers are fantastic! Not an irritating moment to be had.
