Editorial reviews

Editors Select, October 2013 - Speculative fiction has emerged as the most popular subgenre of YA literature in the last decade or so, helping to patently defeat the dire predictions that kids these days just wouldn't care about books. Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy has become an almost iconic addition to this cannon. Insurgent, Book Two in the series, ended with an M. Night Shyamalan-worthy twist that has kept me and the other fans here at Audible biting our nails - making the arrival of Allegiant all the more exciting. Luckily, Emma Galvin, probably the best YA voice talent going today, returns to narrate along with a surprise male co-narrator chosen by a fan-vote. I hate to state the obvious but if you were sucked in by The Hunger Games series (and come on you know you were) then you need to check out Divergent. And to top things off, it's about to be a blockbuster movie. Emily, Audible Editor

So so

Not as good as the first but an okay YA book. Plot is simplistic characters don’t develop much.

Unexpected, Thought Provoking, Dauntless

*spoiler alert*
I looked forward to this book like Christmas. I've read all the other reviews and although I agree that it could have been written with a happy ending, I did like the book. I wish I could have experienced Triss in a non-stressful, post-apocolyptic relationship with Tobias. I can imagine how it could have been written with her helping "fringe" people adjust to New Chicago. That being said, with the situation presented as it was, I thought the author was true to Triss' character. She wanted to live for "the people" and the only way to accomplish that was to do what she did. No one else, as they were developed could have filled that role. This was where the author took this story. It is her story; her art. I'm glad to have experienced it. I really enjoyed the narration. I remember voting for Aaron this summer and happy to report that his voice was perfect for me. It was fulfilling to experience Triss', Tobias' and Evelyn's growth. I feel as if I've grown from experiencing these characters. I think Veronica was brave, dauntless...because based upon the reviews and disappointment, it will be a tough sell in Hollywood. I for one, will see it and enjoy it as much as I can. The movies are not ever as good as the book, and I did love this trilogy and I'm glad I listened to it. I still put it in the top trilogies I've read. I don't always get what I want for Christmas, sometimes I just get what I need.

A major let down.

Was Allegiant worth the listening time?

No. a complete waste of time.

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed the first two books of this series only to be disappointed by the third. I don't mind the tragedy that occurs, not everything can end happily ever after. I do think it could have been done with a little more flare and be more meaningful. I have a hard time believing what was done was enough to stop the government from continuing the project.

It just seems from the very beginning of this book, the author has ran out of gas and is scrambling to keep the plane in the air long enough to find a freeway to crash land upon.

Not what I was expecting, but liked in the end

I have been struggling on what to write in my review for this book, since in the process of listening to it I got so many mix feelings from it: betrayal in the first third part of the book, hopeless in the second and heartbreaking in the last.

But at the end I had to embrace the believe that pretty endings are not always a requirement to get a good book: a good plot although totally different from the previous books is require and Allegiant has it, good characters that you can relate to and get to know and at some level to understand even better is require and Allegiant also has it, and the narrators for this book were amazing, both of them.

I honestly believe this book will be highly appreciated from the perspective of a more adult public than the YA usually is, given some more complex topics and the deepest thoughts and feelings and experiences the characters go throughout the story, so far away from what a younger me would have want for the book to be.

All and all, not what I was expecting, but a very good listen none the less.

Where did this ending come from???

What did you like best about Allegiant? What did you like least?

It was hard to wrap my head around the changing storyline but once I was able to connect the treatment of those living in the fringe to the way the factionless were treated (before the uprising) I saw great potential for Tris and Tobias to change things for the better on a much grander scale. I was so disappointed with the overpowering implication that Tobias was damaged, I didn't realize just how much more the author could damage him. There could have been so many other endings, justice could have been served, love could have survived, death didn't have to crash into us at the end of a series we had come to love. I know I'll listen to the next installments from Tobias (although hour long blurbs only left me wanting more) but if the last one has anything to do with this ending... I may not have the heart to sit through that again.

What about Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford ’s performance did you like?

It was nice to hear from Tobias's perspective. I've enjoyed Emma Galvin for some time and she was the reason I picked this series to listen to.

Did Allegiant inspire you to do anything?

Cry a lot of tears - you can only break someone so much. Tobias deserved so much more.

great book!

Where does Allegiant rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book ranks up there with some of my favorites. The fact that it had evoked such strong emotions from other listeners regarding the end to the book just shows you that she has done her job as an author. She has made the reader get into to the story in such depth that they became angry when they experienced the loss that the characters in the book experience. Of course, anger is a normal reaction. It does not make it a bad book! Just a tear-jerker. Well done Veronica Roth! I find it funny, though, that so many people loved stories like "Romero and Juliet" or "Titanic," and criticize Ms. Roth for the her tragedy. Worth the listen, I say!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Allegiant?

During the zip line spreading ashes. Also, the moment when Beatrice realized that she told Kaleb SHE would never lead him to his execution...

Masterfully done, not how I wanted it but amazing.

Any additional comments?

I had reservations coming into this book because it utilized two narrators, one for Tris and one for Four. I don't tend to enjoy books from more than one perspective. However, I've waited eagerly for this book and I could not wait to see how the trilogy ended. I both loved and hated this book. It is just as well written as the first two, with depth of characters and plot. And Roth managed the dual perspectives adeptly, such that (while I did miss the Tris perspective that hooked me in books 1 & 2) when Four is the narrator I was satisfied.
This book really does answer all the questions that remained for me (although I hope for more books set in the same world) but I hate hate hate the ending. Not because it wasn't well written or anything like that but because it was not how I wanted it to end. I was dismayed on an emotional attachment level by the way Roth ended this saga. It works, but I cried. On the whole though, I would definitely recommend this to those who enjoyed the first two books, and I would recommend the entire series to anyone who hasn't heard them yet.

The Ultimate Sacrifice for Mankind!!!

What did you love best about Allegiant?

It did not leave me with unanswered questoins as some other trilogies have. I wasn't left with now what??? another book?

What was one of the most memorable moments of Allegiant?

Well!!! I don't want to spoil it! But, when Tobis returns to the compound near the end of the book.

Have you listened to any of Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Only from this trilogy.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Tris's trade with her brother.

Any additional comments?

I know several readers have said this book was a disappointment. I almost did not bother. Glad I did. Yes it was sad. But, really Roth did the series justice. No one wants to have one of the main characters pass. I have to say in every book some one was lost Tris's parents died for her FOR LOVE!!! why should this book be any different. Proud of you Veronica Roth sometime there is a bigger point to be made than LOVE CONQUER's ALL.
Fallen Pride, Sacrifice, Love, Truth, Hard Choices, Family, Self Worth, Doubt, & Knowledge it is all in this book.
