Editorial reviews

Editors Select, October 2013 - Speculative fiction has emerged as the most popular subgenre of YA literature in the last decade or so, helping to patently defeat the dire predictions that kids these days just wouldn't care about books. Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy has become an almost iconic addition to this cannon. Insurgent, Book Two in the series, ended with an M. Night Shyamalan-worthy twist that has kept me and the other fans here at Audible biting our nails - making the arrival of Allegiant all the more exciting. Luckily, Emma Galvin, probably the best YA voice talent going today, returns to narrate along with a surprise male co-narrator chosen by a fan-vote. I hate to state the obvious but if you were sucked in by The Hunger Games series (and come on you know you were) then you need to check out Divergent. And to top things off, it's about to be a blockbuster movie. Emily, Audible Editor

Beautiful and so sad...

It ended so sadly. The story is, however, beautifully written and I keep wondering about how the characters lives will turn out as they grow older. Especially Four.

I adore this series!

Would you consider the audio edition of Allegiant to be better than the print version?

Yes! I love both of the narrators. I think they were the first ones that I truly enjoyed listening to. Their voices weren't boring or annoying.

What did you like best about this story?

The end. I hated the ending and loved it at the same time.

What does Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Their performances are so believable. I've listened to a lot of bad narration, but these two had me totally into the story every time I pressed play. I loved the switching back and forth between the two.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I cried, I gasped and I melted a few times.

Any additional comments?

I'm so glad I read and listened to this series before watching the movies but there are so many missed details in the films that it's still worth a listen if you love this series!

Are you kidding me?

I really enjoyed the series up until this last book. I don't like where she went with the story once they left the city. And why, oh why would you ever end a trilogy this way? Without revealing the very tragic and depressing ending, I was very disappointed. I wish she could rewrite it. Very unhappy customer!

Disappointed

IF YOU DON'TLIKE SPOILERS DON'T CLICK THE READ FURTHER BUTTON!!!!!I agree, Veronica Roth rushed this book. It did seem rushed and not very developed!

I believe she fell in love with her own character and adjusted the outcome of the novel to make him hers. I think that it will be revealed in future novels. I think she will have Tobias find someone just like her and fall in love again after the FOUR trilogy. Sorry if I spoiled this book for anyone!!

I DID NOT see that one coming!

This highly anticipated book picks up almost immediately after the events of Insurgent. Questions surrounding the happenings of the last book is revealed, with key players, reasons, and circumstances being laid out and explained.

The difference between this book and the last two is that we are also given Four's POV in this story. At first I was slightly peeved because I liked how the last two books just had Tris' POV. As the reader we could follow Tris on her journey of discovery and it was pleasant to view Four through her eyes. However, as the story progressed, it made sense why Roth had to write in Four's POV. I didn't like it as much because it humanized him, showing how fragile and unstable he actually was, but it could've also been the route Roth took in unwinding the tale. Four and Tris are in stark contrast to each other in this installment. It is evident and it is saddening, but their love grows deeper because of it. As can be expected, this book is filled with a lot of action and as the reader you also take many emotional hits. I really did not expect Roth to do what she did with this story. In shock and in disbelief sums up how I felt at the end of the book. It will be a relief to discuss this book once more people have read it as I'm not sure if I feel sad, disappointed, or content. I think I'm still trying to process it.

Narrators: Emma Galvin & Aaron Stanford
Performance: 5/5
Emma Galvin does a superb job narrating for Tris and Aaron Stanford is a prefect sounding Four. I don't normally like having two different narrators for the same story, but this had to have it because of the set-up of the novel. Both narrators were really good with distinction, pace, inflection, and volume.

Good but not as good as first 2 books

I didn't like the 2 different narrators. Especially when speaking for Tris & Tobias. Was disappointed in the ending. The first 2 books I couldn't stop listening and finished each in 2 days. The 3rd took a week as it just didn't grab me as much.

How the story ends

I will only say this: the way the movie ended in the way the book and then for both magnificent. by the time you get to the third book how can you not find that last book to be really good.
