Editorial reviews

Editors Select, October 2013 - Speculative fiction has emerged as the most popular subgenre of YA literature in the last decade or so, helping to patently defeat the dire predictions that kids these days just wouldn't care about books. Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy has become an almost iconic addition to this cannon. Insurgent, Book Two in the series, ended with an M. Night Shyamalan-worthy twist that has kept me and the other fans here at Audible biting our nails - making the arrival of Allegiant all the more exciting. Luckily, Emma Galvin, probably the best YA voice talent going today, returns to narrate along with a surprise male co-narrator chosen by a fan-vote. I hate to state the obvious but if you were sucked in by The Hunger Games series (and come on you know you were) then you need to check out Divergent. And to top things off, it's about to be a blockbuster movie. Emily, Audible Editor

Excellent End of the Trilogy

I like this book and I disagree with many of the reviews that criticized the book for the plot being unbelievable, and for the book's ending. Of course the book is unbelievable. The whole premise of the trilogy is dysporia and is created in the authors imagination. While I'm not pleased with the ending, at least it wasn't unbelievably sweet like so many reviewers would have liked it to be. Life does have disappointments. And the comment about the goverment's reaction to giving up on a project is 'unbelievable' was untrue because who knows what the state of the US government would be after a major revolution. It isn't any less believable than the experiment itself.

Best part of the trilogy. I liked the end.

Although obvious from the start, with the second perspective, I liked the final book best. In my opinion, good stories require sacrifice.

Perfect

The entire series was phenomenal. The 2nd movie doesn't even compare to Emmas narration. Aaron did a fantastic job!

not just a series for teens

Even though the series is targeted towards teens, the thoughts, struggles and storyline are expressed in such a way that the adult reader can easily lose themselves in the perspective views of Tris and Four. I read this series first and then listened to the books being read and both times it was hard to put down. My compliments to Ms. Roth as well as the voice actors. Great work!

Good but bad ending

I didn't like the ending but I liked that you get half the chapters from 4's perspective.

A wonderful end to an amazing series!

If you could sum up Allegiant in three words, what would they be?

Wonderful all the way through!

What other book might you compare Allegiant to and why?

There really isn't another book that I can compare it too.

Which scene was your favorite?

I loved the very last chapter in the book. The author did a wonderful job wrapping up the series and the characters.

Disappointed with the third book.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No, I found the storyline in this book to be full of wasted time not really going anywhere. I found myself not really that interested in it at some points. Where the first two I could hardly put down to sleep.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

If it was going more places faster and I must say I strongly disagree with the ending. I don't think it was justified in the way it was played out. It made me mad. I opted to read other alternate endings to find better closure to the book. It just felt like it was an attempt to finish the book and not to make an impact on the reader other than anger.

Which scene was your favorite?

The first quarter of the book was not too bad, I stayed involved. I guess my favorite scene would be when they discovered the lie about their world and began to learn more about it...then after that it just lost me.

Was Allegiant worth the listening time?

No. I wish I had stopped at book two.

Any additional comments?

I wish this book could be rewritten to add better closure to the trilogy. It just wasn't what I expected as a reader. I'm not saying that the event that happened still couldn't happen (although I wish it hadn't), it just doesn't seem justified given all that was put into the story.

Great narration but a letdown of a story

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It was time well spent as seeing through the end of the trilogy. But once you get to the end you are just left with sadness and disappointment

What do you think your next listen will be?

My next title will probably be one of the Harry Potter titles, I am also considering starting the I Am Number 4 series, also might consider a more Adult novel from someone like Harlan Coben for a good mystery/ thriller.

What about Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford ’s performance did you like?

I loved how they just seemed to take ownership of their characters and it made it so enjoyable.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

This is a movie and I have seen the first part, I honestly don't know that i will see the second part just to emotional and don't want the big letdown.

Any additional comments?

Overall this Trilogy was enjoyable I just hate when authors have to be so "different" from everyone else that they refuse to give a happy ending. I know this is fiction, I know that this is a dystopian future but after 3 books with these main characters you at least want to see that all their struggles were for a reason and you want to see them finally accomplished and happy it seems like it is the least that they deserve after everything they have been through.
