Editorial reviews

Editors Select, October 2013 - Speculative fiction has emerged as the most popular subgenre of YA literature in the last decade or so, helping to patently defeat the dire predictions that kids these days just wouldn't care about books. Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy has become an almost iconic addition to this cannon. Insurgent, Book Two in the series, ended with an M. Night Shyamalan-worthy twist that has kept me and the other fans here at Audible biting our nails - making the arrival of Allegiant all the more exciting. Luckily, Emma Galvin, probably the best YA voice talent going today, returns to narrate along with a surprise male co-narrator chosen by a fan-vote. I hate to state the obvious but if you were sucked in by The Hunger Games series (and come on you know you were) then you need to check out Divergent. And to top things off, it's about to be a blockbuster movie. Emily, Audible Editor

Almost sad the trilogy is over!

Would you listen to Allegiant again? Why?

Yes! Emma Galvin's narration brings the characters alive in such a way that you feel their strength and insecurity. This is a fantastic series with characters that you want to believe in.

What did you like best about this story?

Triss and Four have a complicated relationship that never feels too romantic (thankfully), but exemplifies that all relationships must endure great challenges to succeed.

What does Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The difference between their voices and the words on the page is like the difference between watching a full screen HD 1080p, surround size version of a show v. a black and white tube tv on mute. Kudos for "being" these characters!

What Happened?

Could you see Allegiant being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

It's funny because after I finished Aliegent. I was thinking they probably should have waited until the first movie came before releasing the book. I was super excited about the movie and now after the last book, I my enthusiasm has definately diminished.

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed the first two books and suggested them to friends but this last book just should have been so much better. I listened to the first books and could not stop listening. This one I kept starting and stopping and starting because it just didn't keep me engaged. I also felt like the pacing was bad sometimes it seemed to be slow and other times things felt rushed. The end was just ............. there. You have this emotional climax (which was rushed but I must admit mad me cry) and then several chapters of clean up and then just ....nothing. All I can say is I was very disappointed.

Not a perfect finale

Although the story has received some negative reviews, I thought the author uniquely addressed the challenge of ending the trilogy with a realistic twist. Death during revolution and uprising should be an obvious piece of the storyline, and this novel follows that philosophy. I feel the characters exhibited realistic reactions and the author artfully crafted a scenarios to portray growth, overcoming obstacles and the power of a biological and support family.

Not where I saw this heading

I loved this series, but I didn't necessarily love this book. Because of that, I probably starred this higher than I really should have. I imagined the ending in a very different manner, and I can't say that I really have closure with this story and these characters that I have grown to care for. I liked having the dual narration. It gave me a slightly different view of Tobias, being in his head for most of the book. I liked Tris a lot better in this book. She was a lot less self centered and actually started thinking about how her actions would affect others emotionally. But again, I didn't care for the route of the end of the story.

I just hate that this is the end.

This is the final chapter of the Divergent trilogy and it does not disappoint. The continued adventure of Tris, Four and their companions while their world devolves around them and opens into a new world. Is this new world any better than the one they left behind? Only time will tell.

Great wrap up!!

I really like the way this last book brings the story to an end. When you finish this book it doesn't leave you hanging, it gave me great closure with the story line and all the characters.

No longer my favorite trilogy but still recommend

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. This trilogy was my all time favorite up until reading the third book. While I may not agree that the story needed to go the way it did, the third book is sound and does allow the author to cover subject matter that was important to her. I read and re-read the first two books several times while waiting a year for the third book to come out. I never got bored. I loved the characters Tris & Tobias and could not wait to see them go forward together in the third book. I will be less enthusiastic about recommending the trilogy to others after reading the third book but will still encourage those who have an interest in this genre of books to read all three.

I love Emma Galvin as a narrator and Aaron Stanford did a great job stepping in on the third book as Tobias. Emma is the perfect voice for Tris.

What other book might you compare Allegiant to and why?

Hunger Games. Strong female lead and likeable, supporting friends. I like that Tris was not as conflicted about her connection with Tobias as the lead female in Hunger Games and other similar series seem to be with their male counterparts.

Which scene was your favorite?

I loved the part where Tris comes to understand that loving someone does not mean that you won't disagree on some very big levels and that you will have to say you are sorry many times in a relationship.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I like the tag on the book...One choice will define you.

Any additional comments?

Four stars because I loved the series but hated the story ending. I will re-read the story after I recover from my grief.

Very emotional but a great ending (spoiler)...

What did you love best about Allegiant?

I really liked how the characters of Tris and Tobias matures into a kind of personalities that you get to love and respect. The story ended in a more realistic fashion and was not over the top or predictable. Tris who was not willing to forget Al in book one and desperately needed forgiveness from Christina in book two finally gets the chance to forgive her own brother and make the ultimate sacrifice. Tris is a true hero with a character that is so easy to fall in love with. In the wonderfully written final chapters, you get to feel the pain and the hollowness that Tobias feels and how desperately he struggles to go on in spite of the loss and because that's what Tris would have wanted him to do.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Allegiant?

The chapter that Tris and Caleb talk about their childhood memories, when she finally decides that she cannot let her brother walk to his death. This was the scene that you get to truly understand who Tris Prior is.

What about Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford ’s performance did you like?

They were both excellent.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Don't know.

Any additional comments?

The story in the final book was darker, complex and more suitable for adults comparing to other books you typically find in this genre
