Editorial reviews

Editors Select, October 2013 - Speculative fiction has emerged as the most popular subgenre of YA literature in the last decade or so, helping to patently defeat the dire predictions that kids these days just wouldn't care about books. Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy has become an almost iconic addition to this cannon. Insurgent, Book Two in the series, ended with an M. Night Shyamalan-worthy twist that has kept me and the other fans here at Audible biting our nails - making the arrival of Allegiant all the more exciting. Luckily, Emma Galvin, probably the best YA voice talent going today, returns to narrate along with a surprise male co-narrator chosen by a fan-vote. I hate to state the obvious but if you were sucked in by The Hunger Games series (and come on you know you were) then you need to check out Divergent. And to top things off, it's about to be a blockbuster movie. Emily, Audible Editor

The popularity of Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games trilogy and its film adaptations has paved the way for so many great dystopian books and series in YA, imagining harrowing worlds where teens must fight for survival and define what life means to them. The enduring popularity of the series has proven that dystopian stories and the sometimes-dark futures they imagine are endlessly fascinating to our imaginations.

Not the end we needed

I get that it’s hard to wrap up loose ends.. but it felt rushed and unceremonious tbh. Idk. Loved the series overall but this book was probably my least favorite 🫤

Strong Conclusion!

First two books were on par with other popular YA novels, perhaps with more sensuality in certain points than might be ideal for kids under 16… but that’s debatable for each family.

Biggest pet peeve was the word both being pronounced “bolth” throughout the novel. First-world problems!

I Expected Something Else!! Not Bad

When a book gets so famous, specially an unfinished trilogies, a big hype comes and everyone keeps on talking about it and how great it is and so on.. i read the first book before it got famous, and it was ok, and i still think its an OK book and trilogy, i have enjoyed reading and listening to them, but i'm not addicted to them and i don't keep on thinking of how a good or bad ending it was and how amazing this happened or that... it was a good book this 3rd one, and it is a good trilogy. Don't get me wrong, I actually think this is a great trilogy for an author who is so young, and i think she will bring good work in the future.

Allegiant started a bit different than what i have expected, and it went in a weird pace.. I felt things were going fast and slow at the same time, specially planning and executing these plans, were a bit fast... if you compare this book to the first and second one, i would say this one had some issues, everything was rushed, and problems were solved tooo quickly, not a big fan of such things

Putting these issues and other aside, I liked the book, you get to know whats going on in the world and why things are in this way. its ending was good, but again, it went too fast.. It should have been a bigger book, i think that would have solved this and it would earn 5 stars ..

Narration was good.. But i'm never a big fan of having 2 voices for each character in a book... its annoying as you need to get used to it.

Overall good book, and a good trilogy... if you liked the hunger games, you will like this trilogy as well.

Hurt and crushed

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, because you cannot just leave off on book 2 even though I am now completely heart broken

What other book might you compare Allegiant to and why?

Maybe the maze runner series or even the Hunger games trilogy, no reason this trilogy just remined me of those books

Which character – as performed by Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford – was your favorite?

I have two (1)Triss (2)Four

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, When it came down to who was actually breaking into the vault and the reprocussions of those actions. I listen at work so here I am sobbing in my office.

Any additional comments?

The trilogy was awesome, however, I am completely heart broken and I am very angy at the author for doing what she did, it didn't have to end this way, I'm not sure I want to read it again and now I'm not so excited about the books being made into movies. The ending really sucks.

Unexpectedly Disappointing

I was waiting with considerable anticipation for this third book in the series. I was initially hooked by the circumstances and characters presented in the first two books, but by the third book, the level of poor decision-making skills manifested by the "heros" was just too overpowering.

I won't include any spoilers, but any author needs to take a hard look at the consequences of making such a story choice to end their tale. There was no driving need to take the course that was taken. Maybe the characters we too focussed on their internal struggles to realize that there were several optional courses of action available to them that would have resulted in a much more satisfying outcome for the reader.

The book started off by undermining much of what had been previously presented that made the story so compelling. And while the characters were trying to absorb these changes, they repeatedly took drastic actions based on very little information that ultimately lead to tragic results.

The book began to feel like the author was using the plot to drive the characters to a place she wanted to them to be when it was all over, rather than the characters driving the plot.

On a side note, I noticed this series is being made into a feature film (probably 3), but so much of what happens is the internal struggles of these characters (especially in this book), that it's going to be a challenge to put it on a screen.

The readers' performances were excellent.

Thought provoking and packs an emotional punch

I pre-ordered this last installment of the Divergent Trilogy for my son so it would arrive on release date and also purchased it in audio for myself on release date. I made a point of getting ahead of my son in the story to prevent him from dropping spoilers, whether by intent or accident. I'm very glad that I "read ahead" of my son in this case. This is a YA read that explores some very adult (and heavy) concepts. I'm glad that I know what he'll be experiencing through literature very soon, as there are things that will be good for us to discuss.

I'll do my best to avoid spoilers as I expand on that.

Veronica Roth did a fantastic job of making us fall in love (and hate) with the inhabitants of her dystopian world in Divergent and Insurgent. First person narration gives us a very intimate understanding of the characters and their motives (and gave me a clue that filled me with dread throughout Allegiant).

In Allegiant, we travel along with those characters that we've come to love and hate as they confront some very adult concepts. Among those concepts are genetic modification, genocide, prejudice (even the 'benign' forms of prejudice - something akin to Affirmative Action), forgiveness, sacrifice, and living in a glass bowl with the oversight of a too-powerful centralized government. The difference between sacrifice and waste of life was explored in Insurgent. In Allegiant, that discussion is taken further.

This is a thought provoking read for young readers and adults alike. I predict this will be one of those novels that really "sticks" with a young reader. It packs an emotional punch. If your young reader is reading these novels, I especially recommend that you read these novels as well, so you can discuss the social issues explored with your young reader.

Left me empty!

Where does Allegiant rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Okay, now I realize that in every book there is a pivotal moment but I really wish that it was not THIS! I was completely heartbroken to hear that what I longed for would never happen. I was first deeply disturbed that the male voice and perspective was brought in (especially when Aaron Stanford portrayed a woman) but after a few chapters I grew to appreciate Tobias's perspective and his input to the story. The previous books were fully of action and romance while this book was more about each independent character and I feel that this was leading up to the conclusion. There were many important aspects revealed but none as impactful as the first two books. After I listened to the last word of the book I am longing for more, but as we all know there is no book like Divergent and the short stories are nothing close to satisfying.

Decent ending to the series except for one thing.

I really enjoyed most of the book EXCEPT FOR THE END, it was totally unexpected. That's all I'll say about it.

The use of two narrators was different than the previous books. It's interesting to see Tobias/Four's point of view.

Both Emma and Aaron did a great job with narration.
