Publisher's summary

Before she went to join Sam and Mogget downstairs, Lirael paused for a moment to look at herself in the tall silver mirror that hung on the wall of her room. The image that faced her bore little resemblance to the Second Assistant Librarian of the Clayr. She saw a warlike and grim young woman, dark hair bound back with a silver cord rather than hanging free to disguise her face. She no longer wore her librarian's waistcoat, and she had a long Nehima at her side rather than a library-issue dagger. But she had kept her library whistle, tucking it into the small pouch at her belt. Though she was many, many leagues from any help the whistle might summon, she felt the need to cling to some small part of her past and her identity.

She had become an Abhorsen, Lirael thought, at least on the outside.

Critic reviews

"Abhorsen is an excellent denouement for a fantasy that is both literary and popularly accessible. Out loud, the powers of this future classic are intensified, especially through Curry's inspired dramatization." (School Library Journal)
"At once an allegory regarding war and peace and a testament to friendship, this thought-provoking fantasy also resolves the true identities of the popular Dog and Mogget characters and suggests that Nix may still have more tricks up his sleeve." (Publishers Weekly)

belongs with The Hobbit and Harry Potter

Tim Curry brought so much life to the story and its characters I couldn't finish the trilogy fast enough!

You may cry..a lot.

Would you consider the audio edition of Abhorsen to be better than the print version?

I personally love audio books! So in my opinion, the audio version is much better. When I'm cleaning, driving, at work with only so much to do, I can have my book playing! So while my hands are preoccupied with mindless tasks, my mind can still be stimulated!

Who was your favorite character and why?

As I said in a before review, the disreputable dog HAS to be my favorite! ESPECIALLY at the end. Get ready, its a crazy ride.

What about Tim Curry’s performance did you like?

What I do like is that he brings each character to life in his own way! You know and love Tim Curry, so sometimes it can be weird to hear him do voices, but you forget that and get lost in his oh so unique story telling!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, the end. The VERY end! So touching and...ok, you have to read this book. Go click buy. I'll wait here.

Any additional comments?

Phenomenal ending to a phenomenal series!

Music is intro

This audiobook plays music for the first and last minute or two. It’s quite annoying, and distracting from the story.

The next generation, part 2

I still consider this part 2 book 2 with Lirael as book 1. With Sabriel, this is an excellent trilogy. Anything else is just icing on the cake.
Lirael has discovered that her unknown father was the previous Abhorsen. Sabriel is her older sister. Sameth is thrilled and relieved that Lirael is Abhorsen-in-waiting, and he has been growing into the role of builder. Sam’s meeting with Lirael smacks of true destiny and it puts them both on the front line facing an ancient and terrible evil. They’ll both be tested to the limits of their bravery.
Love Tim Curry as narrator.

A tidy end to an amazing trilogy.

I absolutely loved this book. I've read it a few times and each time it seemed to get better. Listening to it was just as amazing. I wish Tim Curry was still able to do voice work. Every book book I've listened to from him has been amazing. I suppose it didn't hurt this time that Garth Nix is my favorite author. .
