Publisher's summary

Before she went to join Sam and Mogget downstairs, Lirael paused for a moment to look at herself in the tall silver mirror that hung on the wall of her room. The image that faced her bore little resemblance to the Second Assistant Librarian of the Clayr. She saw a warlike and grim young woman, dark hair bound back with a silver cord rather than hanging free to disguise her face. She no longer wore her librarian's waistcoat, and she had a long Nehima at her side rather than a library-issue dagger. But she had kept her library whistle, tucking it into the small pouch at her belt. Though she was many, many leagues from any help the whistle might summon, she felt the need to cling to some small part of her past and her identity.

She had become an Abhorsen, Lirael thought, at least on the outside.

Critic reviews

"Abhorsen is an excellent denouement for a fantasy that is both literary and popularly accessible. Out loud, the powers of this future classic are intensified, especially through Curry's inspired dramatization." (School Library Journal)
"At once an allegory regarding war and peace and a testament to friendship, this thought-provoking fantasy also resolves the true identities of the popular Dog and Mogget characters and suggests that Nix may still have more tricks up his sleeve." (Publishers Weekly)

I cannot believe I never knew Tim Curry narrates

I read this series as a child. I'm now in my late 20s and it took me this long to look up the books on Audible. To my pleasant surprise, Tim Curry was the narrator! Well that is certainly intriguing. A man who brought me joy (Nigel Thornberry) and terror (Pennywise) in my youth was the narrator of one of my all-time favorite book series. And what a performance it was! Tim Curry is stunning in this series. His voices are all on point, he doesn't give the women horrible baby voices, and Mogget is just fantastic. I think I will make this series a yearly pilgrimage to listen to. I'd give it 10 stars if I could! If you've ever read the series, you will LOVE the audiobook version.

I'm sobbing

I just finished listening and this audiobook had me crying. I'm too emotional to write a good review, but just wanted to write about how much I loved it. Pure magic. Nix has done an excellent job at weaving a wondrous tale with characters I adore. Tim Curry does a fantastic job breathing life into them as well. I would highly recommend listening or reading this series!

Great text, great listen!

This was a great conclusion to the Abhorsen trilogy. The story itself is completely engaging, especially for someone who likes reading fantasy. I loved the way the book kept me on my toes without throwing in extraneous information. Tim Curry is a delight to listen to, giving each character a unique personality and voice. He walks that line between acting and over-acting perfectly. Some people might say his style is too exuberant...I would respectfully disagree :)

Astonishing third entry

To be fair, this is more of a "second half" of a theorical second book, acompasing the second and third books of the series, as it continues right after the last one.
But I don't care.
It was so good.
By now, you already know if you like the characters, story and incredible narration of mr Curry.
I love them all, and can't wait to see if there is more of this universe to read about.
I'm still wanting to hear the bells ring.

It’s Tim Curry

Great story, unique magic, and…Tim Curry. His Mogget is perfection itself. If nothing else, listen for Tim’s legend of a voice.

Story

The reader has great voice for the text, but the voices of the characters could be better

Just wow...

I love the Abhorsen series, but this is the one that brought me to grown man tears.
No spoilers from me but..Kibeth & Yrael made me weep.
Tim Curry never disappoints, just an excellent narrator.
