Editorial reviews

At the Indy 500, exchanges between drivers off the track can be as explosive as those on the track, and Tony Carnaghi's lively and animated reading of Jack Arute and Jenna Fryer's book transports the listener to the front row of the action.

A single wrong turn, improper pass, or blown tire can spell defeat in the race, but they can also easily result in peril. Arute and Fryer expertly capture the drama and volatility of "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" with this collection of riveting stories, and Carnaghi elevates their prose with a performance that makes it difficult to stop listening after hitting play.

Very unique perspective and great stories.
P the narrator mispronounced a lot of driver names, but they are hard to pronounce.
Over all amazing.

Good Story Collection Mangled by Narrator

I’ve attended or watched the 500 festivities and races for over 60 years. I learned a lot of behind the scenes activities. In absolutely No Way would Jack Arute butcher driver, crew chief, owner and sponsor names. Jack was a respected announcer during race times. The narrator didn’t put forth effort to know his material and he degraded the sport.

Great stories, bad narration

The stories presented by Arute in this memoire are fantastic! Any fan of the Indy 500 will truly enjoy these accounts.

However, the narrator butchered MANY of the names of the racers and the series. I’m pretty disappointed that these great stories were jaded by so many mispronunciations.

If you can get past that, you’ll enjoy the book.

Dreadful

Unbelievably dreadful. Interesting stories, but no continuity. And the performance; absolutely awful! The mispronouncing of names and cars is astounding. Doesn’t anyone “proofread” audio books? If I was the author I would demand a redo.

Fun listen, but mispronunciations of well-known names a distraction

Some very interesting, insider stories. A little short on depth, but good for quick listens with a personal touch. Major issue, though, with constant mispronunciations of well-known people's names. Did the publisher even have one knowledge person listen to this before releasing? Amateurish and took away from the book's credibility.

Great Book... Worth the PAIN of the poor narration

This book is packed full of great stories and Jack did a great job of sharing so much fun backstage at the Brickyard. The issue comes from the exceptionally poor reading. From mispronounced names to a cadence that makes it a challenge to know when we've changed topics, this guy is awful. BUT the book is worth the battle!

Interesting stories poorly produced

The poor audio editorial and production is the biggest challenge of this book. It is a constant bother throughout that the narrator and editorial team couldn’t correctly pronounce the name of key subjects and the sanctioning bodies of the sport.

Very good!

I thought the stories were very good but the performance was terrible. The narrator mispronounced so many things I could not believe it. He pronounced Dan Wheldon's name "wheel-don." He also kept saying U-S-A-C instead of U-SAC. I guess the producers of the audio book do not know anything about Indy car racing.
