Publisher's summary

The 1989 Ironman World Championship was the greatest race ever in endurance sports. In a spectacular duel that became known as the Iron War, the world's two strongest athletes raced side by side at world-record pace for a grueling 139 miles.

Driven by one of the fiercest rivalries in triathlon, Dave Scott and Mark Allen raced shoulder to shoulder through Ironman’s 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike race, and 26.2-mile marathon. After 8 punishing hours, both men would demolish the previous record - and cross the finish line a mere 58 seconds apart.

In his new book, Iron War, sports journalist Matt Fitzgerald writes a riveting epic about how Allen and Scott drove themselves and each other through the most awe-inspiring race in sports history. Iron War goes beyond the pulse-pounding race story to offer a fascinating exploration of the lives of the world’s two toughest men and their unquenchable desire to succeed.

Weaving an examination of mental resolve into a gripping tale of athletic adventure, Iron War is a soaring narrative of two champions and the paths that led to their stunning final showdown.

Great story with lackluster narration.

The story itself is awesome! However, the tone of the narrator is disappointing. Choosing a more stoic, masculine voice would have made this complete.

Interesting story but horrible narration

I love these types of stories and this one is fascinating but the narration was down right horrible. It was too painful to finish.

Inspiring and informative

Having just competed at Kona, this book was a fascinating and inspirational insight into the the history of the race and Ironman. The story is amazing uncovering over its duration the battle of wills and battle of self coupled with some scientific insight into how the body and mind works.

Great, recommend to everyone doing or planning to do triathlons

Very inspiring, doing ironman triathlons myself I really could feel the emotions the author put in this book. I very much enjoyed, and very much agree with, the part about how much our results depend on physical strength, and how much on physical strength.

A Riveting Listen

This book is great for any endurance athlete who enjoys inspiring stories. A very well written narrative of a gripping rivalry of the Iron Man event. The book also diverges into the psychology and physiology of sport in order to explain the monumental feats of Dave Scott and Mark Allen on the day of October fourteenth, nineteen eighty-nine.

Awesome listen

The narrator Seth does a great job in bringing the story to life and what a story it is. I must’ve listened to this book half a dozen times. The 1989 IronMan World Championship is the greatest race ever run. But Matt does a great job at setting the scene as to why Dave and Mark were such big rivals. Why could they suffer so much? Then the story of the race is told in excellent detail.

There is no full video of the greatest race ever run. But the book is so vivid that you feel as if you are there.

Solid from start to finish.

As a 49yo trying to run halves I found this story very inspiring. I will definitely be researching videos of these events.

Great book but preview narrator

Loved the book, highly recommend.

Typically always listen to a preview but didn’t in this case. Big mistake. The narrators voice almost had me deleting this many times.

Excellent book

Everyone is complaining about the narrator but I found that if you speed it up to 1.25 speed it's not that bad.

Great book.
