"Halberstam takes the classic sports-bio formula...and transforms it into a nuance-rich story of individual triumph and social history." (Booklist)
I enjoyed the audiobook. From the clear reading by the narrator to the depth and quality of research and thoroughness that we've come to expect from the late David Halberstam, this audiobook delivers. I've long been a fan of Belichick's professional approach towards his craft, and the brilliance in which he manipulates cold hard facts with the greater unknowns of human nature and motivation.
The narrator takes the subject matter a bit too seriously for me at times, which otherwise only slightly detracts from a very entertaining "listen".
I truly enjoyed hearing how Coach Belichick got his start and the path he took to get to where he is at. Everybody has to start somewhere. His story inspired me to keep with the grind I am on. Thanks!
I really enjoyed it's an listened to it at an appropriate time. I started it right around the start of the 2014 NFL playoffs when the Patriots won the Superbowl
If you love football you will like this book. If you are not a football fan and just looking for coaching tips, forget it. This is a well written, well performed version of a bunch of old football guys with pot belly's at the bar re-hasing old football trivia. If I edited out all the old stories that had nothing to do with coaching, the book might be a page long. Suffered throuch 3 chapters and couldn't stand one more word. This is not the education of a coach, just a collection of things about some coaches, the plays they called, who gets the best draft players, growing up as a kid of some coach. I wanted coaching information from the book and there wasn't any.
We all know Bill's an exceptional coach, but this uncritical, almost fawning, work doesn't illuminate at all. Not especially interesting, and not really well-read.
I guess that he is just not that interesting a character, because the story is simply boring. It's like listening to a biography of an average Joe. Nothing happens. I can't recommend it.
