Publisher's summary

In the nearly 20 years he has lived in Bangkok, Christopher G. Moore has written nine novels starring Vincent Calvino, a disbarred American lawyer working as a PI in the dark and steamy Thai capital. Internationally acclaimed, the prizewinning novels have been translated into 10 languages. Now Spirit House, the first novel in the series, is finally available in North America.

A farang is dead and the Bangkok police have a confession the next morning from a young paint-thinner addict. He claims he killed Ben Hoadly, an expat Brit, but Calvino has his doubts when he sees heavy bruises on the kid's face. In no time, Calvino is working both sides, out to find the killer for Hoadly's wealthy father, and eager to clear the addict's name for a beautiful friend who runs a charity in the slums. With the help of his best friend, Pratt, a Shakespeare quoting Thai police colonel, and his loyal assistant, Ratana, Calvino plunges into the dangerous world of addicts, dealers, fortune tellers, inexpensive hit men, oversexed foreigners, and professional bar girls.

Spirit House is a thrilling introduction to Vincent Calvino and Christopher G. Moore's Bangkok.

Tasteless

Crude images as well as foul language spoiled this book for me. The author has an intimate, detailed knowledge of Bangkok and its neighborhoods. Vincent is a colorful character with a morose sense of humor a la Brooklyn, a real New York personality. How he ends up in Thailand is beyond me but his experiences provide insider knowledge of the expat community. I like detective stories from other lands and have read most of Donna Leon, Camillieri and Martin Walker. Not sure I will read further into this series.

Very good narrator saves a very mediocre book

Totally skippable. The opportunity for being a great book was there but it never materialized. There is absolutely nothing horrible or recommendable about this book.

I wouldn’t have been able to finish it if the narration hadn’t been so good and I wasn’t stuck in the house against Coronavirus.

One of my favorites so far

This is a great story - now I must see Thailand for myself. Can't wait to read the next in the series

The Best

I have read several C. M. books and liked his quirky take on things but SPIRIT HOUSE is a cut above the others of his I’ve read. He knows Bangkok and is expert on the sleazy and the better off characters in that unique city. It is a top level detective noir and a tough hero with a heart of gold. What else could you ask for baby?

Don't bother

As a westerner having lived in Bangkok for years. This is such a gross exaggerated stereotype driven quiche driven load of drivel. Plagued with inaccuracies and xenophobia.
