Publisher's summary

Before Julius Caesar ruled Rome, his uncle Gaius Marius was the most powerful man in the eternal city. Once a provincial nobody with a ruined family, Marius only had one way to power: the sword.

Years later, he writes to his protege Quintus Sertorius, explaining to him how he rose through the ranks of the Roman legion to become the most powerful man in the Republic.

He wants to encourage and inspire the young man but gets lost in the retelling of his first experience of war, love, and killing.

A polarizing man from the beginning, Marius was doomed to have people singing his praises or cursing his name. Now, for the first time, Marius speaks for himself.

Amazing ancient Roman historical fiction

This book follows Gaius Marius, from when he joins the legion and is appointed as Scipio’s bodyguard. The way the author blended the fact and fiction was well done, and in a way that this feels like it could be a true story. The characters are great, and I really enjoyed the fight scenes as well. The narrator does a fantastic job with this book. He really puts emotion into his voice, and listening to this book really elevates it above reading it. Overall, this was a great short story, and I’m looking forward to listening to the rest of the series.

This audiobook was provided by the narrator at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review.

A great read/listen

Sons of Mars..
A great novella, this series of Roman stories is off to a fantastic start. And as novellas are perfect for a couple of lunchtime listens.
Narration is excellent in both style and quality.

Different but good.

I received a free audiobook copy of this story by the narrator. He's my #1 fav narrator! While I love learning about anything history-related, I felt like this genre was kind of out of my norm (per the time period), I was willing to give it a try.

While I had a little trouble "getting into" the story at the beginning, I liked it overall. It was easy to follow along to and I liked the writing concept of the author using one character to write a letter to another one. That was different. I also liked being able to see how much the main character was able to grow, especially given this was a short story, and it didn't seem forced or unbelievable.
