Publisher's summary

Deeply shaken after a brutal attack, Bailey Carpenter struggles to reclaim control over what had once seemed like a neatly ordered life. Unable to face her job, her friends, or even the world outside her apartment, Bailey is trapped with her thoughts, replaying the attack in her desperate search for every detail that will help the police uncover the identity of her unknown assailant. Bailey sees her attacker in the face of every stranger, and is unable to trust anyone other than her half-sister Claire, and Claire's snarky teenage daughter Jade.

To pass the time in her lonely apartment, Bailey plays with the binoculars she once used in her career as a private investigator, scanning the high-rise buildings around hers for entertainment. She quickly discovers her favorite source: a handsome, wealthy playboy in the apartment across the street. As she watches him strut around his apartment, she starts to wonder if he's putting on a show - with her as his intended. Looking out the window one night, she seems him looking tauntingly right back at her, binoculars in hand. Could it be the assailant she's been so desperate to identify has been right there, watching her, the whole time? The police believe she's crying wolf, and Claire tries to convince her she's wrong. Doubting her own sanity, Bailey only has Jade left to turn to, and together the two hatch a dangerous plot to discover just what exactly is going on in the apartment across the way.

Didn't see it coming

I almost didn't get this book because some of the reviews were negative. Just goes to show, each to his own. I have listened to all of Fielding's books and wasn't disappointed with this one.
If you're looking for fast action this book isn't for you. Instead, the story develops slowly, with small hints revealed as it progresses. I really enjoyed it.

Should have tried the abridged edition

If you could sum up Someone Is Watching in three words, what would they be?

Long, redundant, unusual.

If you’ve listened to books by Joy Fielding before, how does this one compare?

This was my first Joy Fielding book. Her books were highly recommended.

Which scene was your favorite?

Nah...... No favorite scene. How many times do we have to be told she is scared of the phone ringing and every man might be her rapist? I did love the character Jade. What a breath of fresh air. Hopefully they do start an agency together. It would be a good listen if they just let Jade lead the way and let Auntie clean up behind her.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

This was not a "moving" story. no memorable "Taada" moments when you figure out the plot. It took a LONG time to get to the end and it could have been done in much less time and still been enjoyable. I got to the final 10 minutes and believed The author was going to skip the rapist capture completely and make it part of a series. I would have preferred more depth into the legal system.

Any additional comments?

It hooked me within the first 10 minutes. Never wanted to give up, but it did drag at times. Not sure if I will try another fielding book or not. I like a little more grit in my novels.

Good but....

Well written but I wonder why during all of it not one time was DNA mentioned? I guess there wouldn't have been a story if science was introduced. Plus, she was traumatized abd behaved as most women would after a violent attack and yet the word " crazy" was constantly thrown around to describe her. Traumatized isn't crazy. There were plot hikes a plenty but it did entertain. The narration was great.

Ugh. (May contain spoilers)

Normally, I love Joy Fielding. However, this book has me struggling to believe she was the one who even wrote it.
Claire was so different from her other strong female characters. Yes, she went through something horrible - but there was only so many public meltdowns I could take. Yelling out, "This isn't my car!" when she relizes her Porsche's seat was pushed back was when I cracked. Then losing control of the vehicle, ramming into a construction site, and then fleeing the scene??? Come on.
Asking, "What?" just about every time another character asked a question.
"Are you alright?" was another line that every single character asked about 50 times.
The voice actress played the female characters just fine... but the way she played the men was just ridiculous! It was like she read them off as having few brain cells. I winced every time she spoke "Hey" in a deep throaty voice.
I finished only to hope that the novel would redeem itself. It did not, and it put me in a bad mood.
Don't waste your time.

still a good story

it was read very well, but the story itself was a little slow moving & repetitive. went in too many directions that didn't matter to the point of the story

Rich privilege

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Make the main character someone who relies on their own income so the whole book wouldn't be about a rich woman who wallows about the tragedy making everyone come to her rather than pulling on her big girl panties and getting counseling, getting back to work, and quit being a parasite on those around her. This story is ridiculous with the main character who was working as a PI and had no instinctive training for self-protection, beginning with hiding in shrubbery to do her job. Really?? Bailey sees nothing wrong with her own peeping top activities, but objects to others doing it to her.

Would you ever listen to anything by Joy Fielding again?

Yes, I normally enjoy Ms Fielding's books.

Which character – as performed by Christina Traister – was your favorite?

Clair and Jade

Did Someone Is Watching inspire you to do anything?

Inspires me to stop listening to a whining, selfish, spoiled character who thinks this type of tragedy has only happened to her.
