Really Twisted Short Stories

This author is clearly on the edge of being a sociopath and it is evident in his writing. The stories vary in type and degree but some of them are quite disturbing. For me to admit something is disturbing means the average person will be incredibly creeped out. While that is a compliment, take that to mean that if you are not into books that delve into the twisted psyches of messed up people you might want to pass on this book. Leroy, the story of the janitor was a bit much for me and really showed me where my line is for sick and twisted stories.

As these are short stories the plots are fairly basic and somewhat predictable. Each has a twist to them that takes them in a different direction and adds something different. The characters in these stories really are something else. Michael Gore has an ability to really depict characters that are twisted and downright disturbing. I really haven’t had such a strong reaction to a bunch of short stories as I did with this. Some of these were quite tame and others were really over the top.

The narrator did a good job. I liked his character voices and his 3rd person narrator voice and cadence sucked me into the stories and I was finished with the book before I knew it.

A great collection

This was a great collection of short horror stories. They were all a bit twisted and most were quite gory. The narration is good as well. All in all, a good collection worth checking out.

A Gruesome and Twisted Collection of Stories!

This is a collection of various horror stories that any horror fan will love! Some of the stories were more gory than strange while others were more twisted than gory! However I found I enjoyed each story, some more than others. There's a little for every horror fan out there! The narration was well done. J Stempien did the voices well and read at a nice pace. His narration really brought the stories to life.

Short story collection

Consistently good stories but nothing amazing. If you're hurting for some horror this is a good place to start but not sure how if there aren't better collections out there.

Skeletons in the Attic

This is an engaging collection of horror stories. It grabbed my attention right from the very first story and did not let go until the end of the last story. Each of the stories is well written and have strong characters that keep the reader interested throughout the story. There is a good mix of the depth of horror and plots in these stories. Some are dark and gruesome while others are lighter. Listeners can enjoy many different stories and levels of horror in this collection. I enjoyed the many different plots and scenarios contained in this volume. Narrator J. Stempien does a good job with keeping the narrative flowing and pulling the listener into each of the tales.

Mix of horror stories, some harcore

Some of the stories in this audiobook lean towards the lighter, fun side of horror, while others definitely tread into deeper waters with splatterpunk and 'boobs and blood'. Like some other reviewers here have noted, I'm not entertained by stories featuring sexual violence towards women. (Indeed, while reading/listening to them, I'm often distracted thinking about what kind of minds write and read them with such relish and enthusiasm.).

Sexual ultra-violence aside, I enjoyed many of the other story ideas in this collection. For example, 'Paralyzed'had a flavour of the 'Saw' movies. 'Skeletons in the Attic' finished with an ironic twist that made the entire tale darkly humorous. 'Time is Everything' showed us how the possibility of immortality can bring out the worst in some people. 'Ripe' was a twisted story of soulmates. 'Four Halloweens' followed a victim's quest for vengeance. I liked the ideas in all of the aforementioned stories, although I think some of them would have been more satisfying if the endings had been written a wee bit differently.

The narration was enthusiastic and I can understand why other reviewers gave positive ratings for performance. My subjective, personal preference is for male narrators to use less exaggeration for character voices (especially female character voices), and for a deeper sounding voice that resonates more. This narrator sounds very young, which seems to suit some of the stories in this collection better than others.
