Publisher's summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Acclaimed author Kevin Hearne makes his hardcover debut with the new novel in his epic urban fantasy series starring the unforgettable Atticus O’Sullivan.

“[Kevin] Hearne is a terrific storyteller with a great snarky wit. . . . Neil Gaiman’s American Gods meets Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden.”—SFFWorld

For nearly two thousand years, only one Druid has walked the Earth—Atticus O’Sullivan, the Iron Druid, whose sharp wit and sharp sword have kept him alive as he’s been pursued by a pantheon of hostile deities. Now he’s got company.

Atticus’s apprentice Granuaile is at last a full Druid herself. What’s more, Atticus has defrosted an archdruid long ago frozen in time, a father figure (of sorts) who now goes by the modern equivalent of his old Irish name: Owen Kennedy.

And Owen has some catching up to do.

Atticus takes pleasure in the role reversal, as the student is now the teacher. Between busting Atticus’s chops and trying to fathom a cell phone, Owen must also learn English. For Atticus, the jury’s still out on whether the wily old coot will be an asset in the epic battle with Norse god Loki—or merely a pain in the arse.

But Atticus isn’t the only one with daddy issues. Granuaile faces a great challenge: to exorcise a sorcerer’s spirit that is possessing her father in India. Even with the help of the witch Laksha, Granuaile may be facing a crushing defeat.

As the trio of Druids deals with pestilence-spreading demons, bacon-loving yeti, fierce flying foxes, and frenzied Fae, they’re hoping that this time, three’s a charm.

“[Kevin] Hearne is a terrific storyteller with a great snarky wit. . . . Neil Gaiman’s American Gods meets Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden.”SFFWorld

“[The Iron Druid books] are clever, fast-paced and a good escape.”Boing Boing

“Hearne understands the two main necessities of good fantasy stories: for all the wisecracks and action, he never loses sight of delivering a sense of wonder to his readers, and he understands that magic use always comes with a price. Highly recommended.”The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction

eh...

Clever Girl whines too much, she cocked it up pretty bad there, and I almost Gabe a 3. But Owen is brilliant and deserved a 5.

Witty, Funny, and Hip fantasy series

Lots of smiles and laughs in this series. Especially fun are the current references tied to books, tv shows, and recent movies - such as Star Trek, Dr Who, even the most recent version of Sherlock for example. This last book had me racking my brain for where I had heard the name Jon Snow before . . . and the references are just part of the action or conversations and could easily slip by someone . . . for example someone who has no idea what a Dalek is (as used when describing a dress that flared out like a Dalek . . . )

Luke Daniels is great as the narrator - I really enjoyed his narration of a book called 600 Hours of Edward - and didn't realize it was the same narrator until reading some feedback. He is very talented and has a broad range. The only accent I had question about was the Scandinavian or some type of Northern, Snowy region accent that sometimes sounded like an accent of Pakistan or India. But I love his version of the Irish Wolfhound Oberon. I know people have commented that it is somewhat Scooby-Doo-ish but it is perfect for the series.

I'm really looking forward to more books in this series. They are written smart and manage to lighten the heart.

Keeps getting better

What did you love best about Shattered?

Brought in new character, loved the old guy trying to get used to 2000 years of progress in just a few weeks.....but he's a druid, so it flies. People were complaining about too many characters to follow. I had no problem. The story was twisted and in the end you find out some things that I guess will take us into the next book. But it was pretty awesome

Who was your favorite character and why?

Always love Oboron the dog. He keeps everything real. REALLY.

Have you listened to any of Luke Daniels’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I love his narrations, he does voices and emotions wonderfully. One of my favorites is "600 hours of Edward" When I see him as narrator I always check out what the book is about.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Actually I did it was the 4th weekend and I listened straight through with a few breaks for food and other breaks. Didn't want to let go until I knew what would happen.

Any additional comments?

Can't wait for the next book and I hope Luke Daniels Narrates that as well he's wonderful.

Never a dull moment

I have followed this series from the beginning and I am so glad I have.
I am always surprised by the twists and turns each story takes.
I always find myself rooting for, and crying for, the characters.
Great writing. Great narrating.

Best Series I've read in a long time.

I loved this book, and can't wait for the next one to arrive. As an author Kevin Hearne has a wicked sense of humour, and he doesn't really care who he pokes in the nose with that humour. Sometimes to his characters detriment. In this one, our two favourite Druids are off on another adventure, sometimes together, sometimes apart, but together again in the end.
This is the 7th book in this series, and every single one of them is a keeper. I laughed myself silly at the sly wit and sarcastic comments that Oberon(an Irish Wolfhound) makes.
As the narrator Luke Daniels is one of the best voice artists I've had the pleasure to listen to.
He has narrated many books that I've purchased over the years, and has always done a fantastic job with the voices. He is extremely proficient at accents, from Irish to Polish to Vampire to Bear or what you think a bear might sound like if it could talk.
This series is worth every single penny you have to put out to listen/read it. Can't wait for the next book.

CLIFFLHANGER

Would you listen to Shattered again? Why?

I would listen to Shattered again, definitely!!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Shattered?

Most memorable to me was probably when Owen talks of the reality that he may not live through the war, the finality and inevitability was moving.

What does Luke Daniels bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

THE ACCENTS ARE AWESOME!!!!!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was very sad when Govnew died...

Any additional comments?

I can only say that Kevin Hearne needs to hurry up with the next one!!!

Better than Book 6

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, because its fun and enjoyable (great recovery if they just read/heard game of thrones). This is not your typical fantasy, much more casual (and the last book seemed to forget that). It would also be a great series for those that want something that has a few laughs and giggles instead of blood, guts, and incest.

What other book might you compare Shattered to and why?

Don't really follow any other casual fantasy, maybe Terry Brooks Landover?

Which scene was your favorite?

The beginning, but always enjoy when the hero is made more realistic by having their childhoods rehashed by family/friends.

Any additional comments?

Great story for road-trips and traveling. Don't have to be hard core fantasy fan to enjoy, really enjoy that it takes a world view on contemporary fantasy. Felt that Luke D. did a great job in switching up voices, and perspectives (something that he has gotten much better at).
