Publisher's summary

The inspiring true story of "the reluctant World War I infantryman who became an American legend" - in his own words (The New York Times).

October 8, 1918: Amid the last of the Allies' attempts to defeat the Germans, Sgt. Alvin York of Tennessee found himself and his platoon of only 17 men trapped in the thick of heavy machine gun fire. Rather than retreating or calling upon the artillery to take out the nest, York single-handedly took out 25 Germans, dropping them one by one, and captured many more.

This is only one of the many tales of York's famed heroism, which were heralded as some of the most impressive battle stories in the history of modern warfare. Sergeant York contains the legendary soldier's war diaries, which offer up-close snapshots of his fabled military career.

Included in this new edition of a classic work are new forewords written by York's son and grandson, which provide both personal and historical recollections of their predecessor. In Sergeant York, experience the fascinating life of an American hero.

Great True Story

I love history and especially when it is an incredible story of how God used an ordinary person for extraordinary things. That’s exactly what this story is about.

Outstanding and Inspiring!!!

This wonderful book illustrates how much we have tragically lost as a country and a society! People with convictions, like Alvin York, or Desmond Doss, would never be tolerated today. They would never encounter commanding officers, who would respect their religious views. Instead, our military is attacking and removing people who try to follow their conscience, particularly if it has to do with the Christian faith, They are very welcoming to Islam, atheism, secular humanism, and other religions, but not the Christian faith.

A Most Special Man of God

Alvin York was one of a kind. He would be deemed simple and backwards by many. But he was a fighter and one of the most recognized war heroes in American history. But that didn't make the man. Alvin's faith in Jesus Christ made the man. And though this book deals a great deal with his early life before venturing into any kind of a war diary, it's his simple, unyielding faith in Christ that shines through. That's it. That was Alvin York and his legacy. He shied away from any kind of celebrity. If only we had more men like this alive today. Tom Parks makes the perfect narrator here. He does Alvin's story the justice it deserves. Amazing all the way around.

A simple, yet inspirational man.

Having watched the 1941 movie as a youth, this story made a lasting impression on me. I rewatched the movie recently so felt inspired to search for a book. I came across this one and was glad to have a mix of commentary and York's own words from his diary. I learned more about the man, his time as a youth, his passions, his perspective on history, his take on faith, and his endeavors that took place after the events of the movie. He was a simple man, a humble person, and a good model of what it means to be faithful.

An example of a Christian man

I loved listening to this man read. He told Alvin York's story from Alvin's point of view and did an excellent job of using his dialect. I feel that this is an excellent example of what can happen by truly trusting in the Lord.
