Publisher's Summary

Audie Award Winner, Personal Development, 2014

Bestselling author, speaker, and world-traveling success coach Jen Sincero cuts through the din of the self-help genre with her own verbal meat cleaver in You are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life. In this refreshingly blunt how-to guide, Sincero serves up twenty-seven bite-sized chapters full of hilariously inspiring stories, life-changing insights, easy exercises, and the occasional swear word.

Via chapters such as "Your Brain Is Your Bitch," "Fear Is for Suckers," and "My Subconscious Made Me Do It," Sincero takes you on a wild joy ride to your own transformation, helping you create the money, relationships, career, and general all-around awesomeness you so desire. And should you be one of those people who dreads getting busted with a self-help book in your hands, fear not.

Sincero, a former skeptic herself, delivers the goods minus the New Age cheese, giving even the snarkiest of poo-pooers exactly what they need to get out of their ruts and start kicking some ass. By the end of You are a Badass, you will understand why you are how you are, how to love what you can't change, how to change what you don't love, and how to start living the kind of life you used to be jealous of.

What the Critics Say

"Sincero brings a fun, feminine verve to now well-tread self-help tropes... The tone is far more feisty than academic, and there's humor on every page, all of which is exactly what her intended audience most needs." (Publishers Weekly)

    "Title misrepresents tone of content"
What disappointed you about You are a Badass?

With a stand-out title like "You are a Badass", I expected a down-to-earth, rough around the edges perspective on the self-betterment theme. The LAST thing I expected was more of the same new-age speak that tends to pervade this genre. While the book contains chapters titled like "Your brain is your bitch", the actual content veers into discussions of communicating with the "source energy" of the universe, and "raising your vibrations" through meditation to fulfill your visions. The dissonance between how the book presents itself and the actual content was enough to prompt me to write this review to help inform future potential buyers.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The book is not without its helpful points and uplifting message- I did enjoy aspects of it. However, I'm offended by what seems to me to be a manipulative marketing angle using "curse words" in the title and chapter titles as an attempt to set this book aside from the sea of other self-development books that have similar content and approach.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

    The narration was great!

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from You are a Badass?

As editor, I would have strongly suggested the author remove or rework aspects that veer into new-age speak. "Raising your frequency", "vibrations", "source energy", "yoga", "mantras" are what a book titled "You are a Badass" should NOT contain. With as much time as this books spends on these topics, I'd suggest it be titled "Raising Your Vibrations: How to tap into the Source Energy of the Universe" - then readers would get what they paid for.

    Any additional comments?

The title / cover marketing of this book was successful in that they convinced me to buy the book, but a failure in conveying the mood of the content.

    "Finding your inner BadAss"
What did you love best about You are a Badass?

This Book will inspire you to be better....reminding & guiding you to be better than where you are now....

What was one of the most memorable moments of You are a Badass?

"There is nothing more unstoppable than a freight train of fuck yeah"....(Yep, she throws a few "F" bombs around haha)

Which character – as performed by Jen Sincero – was your favorite?

She does a great job with the presentation of the material.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from You are a Badass?

So many....a few stand out moments for me where regarding time & money. Showing "respect" to these two very important life spokes....she presents material in a very "Real" way. It's not a lecture....It's a "Hey, get your ass in gear....& get the fuck on the fuck"...haha (whatever that means:). It's all the great material from all the good books rolled into one. It's good. You will enjoy....

    Any additional comments?

I have read all the "Good Books"....This is the best....It's entertaining & inclusive of all the Good Lessons. She tells it to ya in a real way. I am a 48 year old Male. I loved it. Listening for the 5th time and don't ever plan to stop....it's a great resource.

    "Good at times"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

    Only during a few moments.

What was most disappointing about Jen Sincero’s story?

    The entire story as repetitive.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Often the quotes in beginning of each chapter.

Was You are a Badass worth the listening time?

    Only for the quotes.

    Any additional comments?

Has a few good moments but overall is often repetitive. She always goes back to love yourself. I also disagree that if you wish for a million bucks it will somehow manifest. The only way to really make money is to work for it. Yes she is right we need to reach higher goals by putting in the effort, but just wishing for the universe to bring me what i want is unrealistic.

"Way too much counterfactual new-age nonsense"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Removing the 80% of this book that confidently makes bold assertions about how the world works with respect to "source energy", "connecting" to said source energy, how energy vibrates and vibrates at certain frequencies, how we want our energy to vibrate at higher frequencies and how our energy vibrating attracts anything that vibrates at the same frequency, etc.

I read to learn and not just to reaffirm my existing worldview. Yet, for me, far far too much time is spent making these extraordinary and - from my perspective - implausible assertions.

One does not need to agree with, or even understand, everything in a book to benefit from it, but I do prefer to find some common ground to build on before starting to accept new assertions.

None of the claims about energy and frequencies and attractions are new at all, of course. To the contrary, I think that at this point we do have reason to believe that those claims are false.

I really did make an effort to sit through the parts that make these claims I think are very likely false; all the while trying to see them as allegorical and trying to extract whatever benefit and meaning from them I could. Eventually it seemed to me that I just couldn't recognize the world I live in with what the author spent the vast majority of the time conveying.

So why don't I just live-and-let-live, and allow people with a worldview different from my own to benefit from this book in whichever way they can? I do. Nothing I'm saying here interferes with that. I'm writing this for people like myself so they can have an idea about what they're getting in to.

Has You are a Badass turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No, not at all.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment

    Any additional comments?

If you prefer your self-help more evidence based, have a look at anything by Kelly McGonical.

"Best reminder I've read in a long time!"

Every now and then we all need to be reminded just how much more we can be, and just how fast it's over. This book serves as a great reminder that you do as much as you can, have as much fun as you can, enjoy this planet as much as you can and love everyone around you as much as you can. Go do those things you love so much and do them now. Don't you dare look back in regret for what you didn't try...

"The "New" Secret - Load of Bull"
What would have made You are a Badass better?

This has nothing to do with anything. 5 Hours of talking in circles.

Would you ever listen to anything by Jen Sincero again?

    No.

Would you be willing to try another one of Jen Sincero’s performances?

    No.

What character would you cut from You are a Badass?

    The narrator.

    Any additional comments?

This is a bunch of new age if you think it, then you will get it. The basis of this book is about vibrating at the same frequency as your desires to attract the like vibrations. Blah, Blah, Blah horrible. Useless.

"Cool, but not a lot of take-aways"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend someone who is just not feeling good to get this audiobook. It really doesn't say much useful stuff, but it sort of helps you remember that things aren't that terrible. So if someone was having a bad week or month or year, this book is the one for them.

What was most disappointing about Jen Sincero’s story?

It's been a while since I've listened to it and I remember it amping me up at the time, but I have lost most of the take-aways. There aren't structured plans for you to make your life better from it. Maybe that's the point, maybe you're not supposed to be looking for that out of it, but I don't feel like it changed my life. Maybe made me feel a bit easier for a week or two.

Have you listened to any of Jen Sincero’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, I don't know if she has any others actually.

Could you see You are a Badass being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Nope. It's not really that deep. There are some okay stories in it, but it's really not that developed.

    Any additional comments?

Don't buy this looking for some strategy to conquer all of your problems. It's like a band-aid book, which may be useful in its own right, but isn't gonna change your life.

"Nothing earth shattering, just some basic advice.."
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

While the advice given was relatively good, I didn't enjoy the many references to the Universe etc... Reminded me too much of The Secret - talk to the universe and it will reward you. Having said that, there is a lot of basic, no bs, advice.

Would you recommend You are a Badass to your friends? Why or why not?

Not really. I've read/listened to better. I would recommend it to some lost teens and/or young adults who prefer more color in their reading.

How could the performance have been better?

It was fine. The content was somewhat lacking at times.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Mild curiousity

    Any additional comments?

Some good messages but I didn't enjoy the packaging.

"Just more Secret manifestation hocus pocus"
What would have made You are a Badass better?

If it didn't rely so much on nonsense like manifestation and wishful thinking, I mean, raising your frequency.

What could Jen Sincero have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Actually be a badass and tell people how to be one instead of more wishful thinking a la the Secret.

Would you be willing to try another one of Jen Sincero’s performances?

Not if she keeps spouting this nonsense. I mean, if it works for her, that is great. But I just can't make myself believe in mystical, magical thinking that is going to swoop in and change my life and the world.
