True Self, False Self | [Richard Rohr]

True Self, False Self

Franciscan priest Richard Rohr feels that there is no more challenging spiritual issue than the “problem of the self". Most of contemporary spiritual teaching, he believes, is still trying to inspire and fortify the private self, the autonomous "I". Even much church work is trying to evangelize and sacramentalize what many would call "the false self." Basic transformation is not expected, but merely a new set of beliefs and practices or loyal membership in a new group.

Publisher's Summary

Franciscan priest Richard Rohr feels that there is no more challenging spiritual issue than the “problem of the self". Most of contemporary spiritual teaching, he believes, is still trying to inspire and fortify the private self, the autonomous "I". Even much church work is trying to evangelize and sacramentalize what many would call "the false self". Basic transformation is not expected, but merely a new set of beliefs and practices or loyal membership in a new group. This only confirms the disguise of the ego, but does not truly offer a "new creation". Both the individual and society remain largely unchanged.

Rohr suggests that until the false assumptions of Western individualism are clearly faced and experienced by religious believers (and they are the only ones fully prepared to face it), there will be no real breakthroughs for Christianity or any religion.

He makes reference to the work of Ken Wilber, Thomas Merton, Eckhart Tolle, the mystical tradition especially of Julian of Norwich, and the new paradigms offered by quantum physics. In a presentation that embraces the challenge, inspiration, and the genuine hope that is offered by the Gospel of Jesus, Rohr illustrates the implications of transformation both for individuals and for society at large.

    "Eye-opening, beneficial"

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this teaching conference. If you have an interest in understanding the way of true spirituality, this will be a great help to you. I could not be happier with the material provided and I look forward to listening to more of Father Rohr's books and teachings.

One of my favorites of Richar Rohr's to date. Great insight into understanding the ego and the false self. Very well explained.

I like the treatment of the doctrine of in-dwelling, our participation in the divine life of God.

    "More inspiration"

This was an execellent lecture. My only issue is he refers to the hand outs and it would have been great to have these available. It would be 5 stars with the hand outs.

"Fountain of jewels to lighten your spiritual path"

Richard Rohr is brilliant as always in his discovering, enriching and blending to guide us to the mature spirituality. Adding insights from past and present thinkers Rohr provides us a path, with clear steps of growth, so we are not lost in the unlimited "in-between" but can relate to a task here and now.

This audio FORMAT from Audible however, sucks sucks sucks x 1000. It gets stuck in the same place, I cannot play it on my favorite devices, I cannot normally skip 10 sec bacwards/forwards for relistening - it skips the whole chapter, it crashes my player, sections are just scratch noises -- o Lord, why can't they just give us an MP3 for our money??

    "True Self, False Self"

This is a truly beautiful audio book. Love Richard Rohr's explanation of the true self (and the false self) and how we can transcend the false self through our experiences of life, getting us back in touch with our authentic being :) Couldn't recommend this audio more. I have recently converted from Catholism to Buddhism, but feel that his words have so much to offer to people of all faiths. It is wonderfully insightful, discussing the biology of transcendence, how we are 'wired' to find something greater than the 'little I'. I have listened to it so many times and got my husband listening with me I was so moved by his words which are delivered with humour and simplicity. They should make this audio a part of schools' religious education....it is so, so powerfully transformative!
