Franciscan priest Richard Rohr feels that there is no more challenging spiritual issue than the “problem of the self". Most of contemporary spiritual teaching, he believes, is still trying to inspire and fortify the private self, the autonomous "I". Even much church work is trying to evangelize and sacramentalize what many would call "the false self". Basic transformation is not expected, but merely a new set of beliefs and practices or loyal membership in a new group. This only confirms the disguise of the ego, but does not truly offer a "new creation". Both the individual and society remain largely unchanged.
Rohr suggests that until the false assumptions of Western individualism are clearly faced and experienced by religious believers (and they are the only ones fully prepared to face it), there will be no real breakthroughs for Christianity or any religion.
He makes reference to the work of Ken Wilber, Thomas Merton, Eckhart Tolle, the mystical tradition especially of Julian of Norwich, and the new paradigms offered by quantum physics. In a presentation that embraces the challenge, inspiration, and the genuine hope that is offered by the Gospel of Jesus, Rohr illustrates the implications of transformation both for individuals and for society at large.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this teaching conference. If you have an interest in understanding the way of true spirituality, this will be a great help to you. I could not be happier with the material provided and I look forward to listening to more of Father Rohr's books and teachings.
One of my favorites of Richar Rohr's to date. Great insight into understanding the ego and the false self. Very well explained.
This book is a good choice for anyone who feels stuck in their spiritual journey.
Richard's desciptions of the ways we in which we have encounters with the Christ.
Richard explains how we got to where we are and how we can experience a fresh encounter with the Divine within and in all things.
The articulation of real life descriptions we all encounter with the true and false self. Each one of us must undergo a transormation of encounters which can lead us to true liberation and freedom for the Divine.
I highly reccomend this book.
As usual, Richard Rohr is profound and enlightening. This is really a special piece. Not a book, but rather a recording from the lecture series, True Self, False Self. Worth listening to over and over again.
Richard cuts through the false self. His stories and self deprecating humor helps break it down. I felt as if I was at the conference.
This was an execellent lecture. My only issue is he refers to the hand outs and it would have been great to have these available. It would be 5 stars with the hand outs.
These are lectures by R. Rohr given at a conference. The sound quality is wonderful. The lectures are fabulous. Highly recommend for anyone ready to hear it on your spiritual journey.
Refreshing and inspiring and speaking of truth, which is terribly lacking in our human experience today. I will listen again and again and recommend it to others. When I tell my therapist I don't have anger or am not easily offended they assure me that I am just ignoring these emotions and need to express them or I am not functioning healthily. But I hear the truth about my true self in what Rohr explains of true self and know it is my truth.
"True Self, False Self"
This is a truly beautiful audio book. Love Richard Rohr's explanation of the true self (and the false self) and how we can transcend the false self through our experiences of life, getting us back in touch with our authentic being :) Couldn't recommend this audio more. I have recently converted from Catholism to Buddhism, but feel that his words have so much to offer to people of all faiths. It is wonderfully insightful, discussing the biology of transcendence, how we are 'wired' to find something greater than the 'little I'. I have listened to it so many times and got my husband listening with me I was so moved by his words which are delivered with humour and simplicity. They should make this audio a part of schools' religious education....it is so, so powerfully transformative!
Amazing. Just what I needed to hear. It is everything everyone needs to know. Mind blown. What a gift. Thank you.
