Publisher's Summary

First published in 1980, Transitions was the first book to explore the underlying and universal pattern of transition. Recently named one of the 50 most important self-help books of all time, Transitions remains the essential guide for coping with the inevitable changes in life.

Transitions takes listeners step-by-step through the three perilous stages of any life passage, explaining how each stage can be understood and embraced. Offering an elegantly simple yet profoundly insightful roadmap for successfully navigating change and moving into a hopeful future, the process is ever relevant and applicable today. Among the subjects covered:

Endings. Every transition begins with one. Too often we misunderstand them, confuse them with finality: "That's it, all over, finished!" Yet how we recognize endings is key to how we can begin anew.

The Neutral Zone. The second hurdle of transitions: a seemingly unproductive "time-out" when we feel disconnected from people and things in the past and emotionally unconnected to the present. Yet the neutral zone is really a time of reorientation. How can we make the most of it?

The New Beginning. In transitions, we come to beginnings only at the end, when we launch new activities. To make a successful new beginning requires more than simply persevering. It requires an understanding of external signs and inner signals that point the way to the future.

"Empowering for anyone going through a transition!"

From the most trusted voice on transition, I can see why this was a National Bestseller. This empowering audio offers strategies for coping with the difficult, painful, and confusing times in life - and don't we all have those! This is a great audio to give to anyone you know who is going through uncertainty and change.

"Useful and grounding if a bit dated."
Would you consider the audio edition of Transitions to be better than the print version?

    No

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Not applicable.

What three words best describe Sean Pratt’s performance?

    Ward Cleaver.

What did you learn from Transitions that you would use in your daily life?

Don't rush the period between and ending and a new beginning. Accept the chaos and ambivalence as part of the process.

    Any additional comments?

    A worthwhile listen.

    "Dissatified"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I was disappointed with this book because I thought it would have more material related to transitions of various kinds. It seemed to be geared toward marriages and other personal relationships.

Has Transitions turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No,.

Would you be willing to try another one of Sean Pratt’s performances?

    Yes

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No, it had no redeeming qualities for me.

I like to listen to business, self-development, behavioural and books that challenge my perspective

    "Difference between Change and Transition"
If you could sum up Transitions in three words, what would they be?

Clear, useful, at times rambling on

If you’ve listened to books by William Bridges before, how does this one compare?

    Only listened to this one

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The clear differentiation between the process of change which is external and transition which is an internal process was very useful. Also the notion that these two processes necessarily do not happen at the same time will help to be aware when working towards creating change, as for change to be successful transition is also required. The book speaks about personal issues in life but to me the principal the book discusses applies to organisations as well. The practical questions it offers when looking at change is also quite useful:

“… 1- What are the indications that your work life is in transition? change is only change, transition is more inwardly, moving from one chapter to the next. 2- what is the developmental context of this work life transition? put in words the personal and career issues. What title you can give to this transition? what is the title of the next chapter? 3- Imagine that you are really old, 90. Look back and see yourself now. Then you will know what was going on now. You may also know how they may turned out if you had taken a different path from that vantage point look and identify of the timing of change and the sign. What feeling you have with your situation now?”

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    No, only found it useful

    Any additional comments?

I recommend the book to anyone who is going through a change/transition in life. It helps get a better rational understanding of the process of change in life and therefore deal with it more efficiently.
