For Tory Johnson, weight was always an issue; although she felt ashamed of how she looked, Tory could never find the will to change. When a network executive warned her that if she didn't lose weight her television career could be in jeopardy, Tory experienced something profound: A Shift. She knew she didn't just want to change, she needed to change.
The Shift begins with this eye-opening incident and follows Tory on her weight-loss journey. Tory creates a plan, makes a list of things she is willing to sacrifice, and teaches herself the realities of self-discipline. With disarming honesty, she shares her experience of overcoming the inevitable challenges along the way. In the process, she becomes not just healthier but happier - a shift that impacts every facet of her life.
For anyone who has struggled to make a big life change, The Shift offers valuable lessons and inspiration for taking charge once and for all.

"One brief comment from a colleague gave Tory Johnson the determination to take control of her eating habits, after a lifetime of feeling unhappy about her weight. Her honest, thoughtful, and often hilarious account of how she lost more than sixty pounds, kept her sanity, and changed her eating habits forever will resonate with anyone who has ever struggled to eat healthfully. I couldn't put this book down." (Gretchen Rubin, best-selling author of The Happiness Project)
Everything is here - incredibly beautiful author who has gone through a huge process of shifting from poor overweight victim and slave to the giant processed and fast food industry...to a fit champion, a superhero who turned off the glutton switch and turned on the 'life' switch. I love Tory Johnson - I also love the fact that she does her own narration because there are plenty of intonations needed in this and she delivers. This is spot on what one does to lose weight - sometimes the alternative is to try something give up and gain more. She loses weight and shows the everyday trials and tribulations.
Tory has demonstrated courage, perseverance and has shown her vulnerabilities and invulnerabilities. She flipped the switch. She's proud. She's even proud of her intimacy at home and I think that is fantastic. Its human. Anyway kudos to you Tory - you're a true winner and I learned some great things from you. I'm excited about this audiobook. I too am shifting. Thank you.
I wish I could give this book a higher rating, because the way the author handled a boss's criticism of her weight is truly inspiring. Instead of consoling herself with food, she launched a plan to get into shape -- but that's where it becomes difficult to get behind her "Shift" approach. A lot of what Johnson does, and endorses, does not seem sustainable for long-term fitness. How realistic is it to say that a glass of wine or an occasional dessert are off limits? How sensible is it to regard carrots and blueberries as "bad"? Why did she give exercise short shrift until late in the program? And why in the world did Johnson agree to her daughter's birthday wish of her mother going off the diet, and not stand up to the sabotage? In short, my concern is that Johnson's all-or-nothing approach will lead some "Shifters" to give up, or else regain their weight when they inevitably encounter a food challenge they have not learned to navigate. A final annoyance: Johnson's gratuitous details about how her marriage benefited from the weight loss. Too much information!
Such an interesting book! I had no idea who Tory Johnson was before I purchased this book, but I am so glad I did! It is exciting and emotional to listen to her story since it sounds so much like my own. She is very inspirational and a very talented writer! So happy for her success!
A good listen to get you ready for your own 'shift', although it's quite American, you can still relate to Tory's journey.
