Publisher's summary

This inspiring number one best seller is a gutsy look at what it takes to undo a lifetime of self-sabotaging habits and feel great about the change and yourself.

Good Morning America contributor Tory Johnson is all about helping women make great things happen. And after a lifetime of obesity, of failing at fad diets and sporadic health programs, Tory was ready to make great things happen for herself - making the shift by recognizing that it was time to lose weight once and for all, and do it her way. In 12 months, she lost more than 60 pounds, and for the first time shares what she learned, what she ate and how she changed in The Shift: How I Finally Lost Weight and Discovered a Happier Life, her most personal book yet.

In this audiobook edition, Tory Johnson adds a look back at the amazing response her Shift has brought from thousands of people across the country, shares additional lessons learned in the year following the book's publication, and includes the stories of "Shifters" - listeners so inspired by her book they have made their own life-changing Shifts.

Critic reviews

"One brief comment from a colleague gave Tory Johnson the determination to take control of her eating habits, after a lifetime of feeling unhappy about her weight. Her honest, thoughtful, and often hilarious account of how she lost more than sixty pounds, kept her sanity, and changed her eating habits forever will resonate with anyone who has ever struggled to eat healthfully. I couldn't put this book down." (Gretchen Rubin, best-selling author of The Happiness Project)

Relevant yet really intense.

The walk through her life is fascinating to watch but I have to say, I felt like I was being yelled at the whole book. I finished it to see if she relaxed at all through the process. Not so much. Perhaps someone else reading it wouldn't have been so intense. It's honest and while I didn't need a play by play for her sex life, it did make me laugh at times.

This Audiobook Rules and I Am Working On My Shift!

Everything is here - incredibly beautiful author who has gone through a huge process of shifting from poor overweight victim and slave to the giant processed and fast food industry...to a fit champion, a superhero who turned off the glutton switch and turned on the 'life' switch. I love Tory Johnson - I also love the fact that she does her own narration because there are plenty of intonations needed in this and she delivers. This is spot on what one does to lose weight - sometimes the alternative is to try something give up and gain more. She loses weight and shows the everyday trials and tribulations.

Tory has demonstrated courage, perseverance and has shown her vulnerabilities and invulnerabilities. She flipped the switch. She's proud. She's even proud of her intimacy at home and I think that is fantastic. Its human. Anyway kudos to you Tory - you're a true winner and I learned some great things from you. I'm excited about this audiobook. I too am shifting. Thank you.

I enjoyed listening to this book. Tory's story is about common sense, and making up your mind to do something and stick to it. She doesn't make the change with any fads, and works hard to keep at it. She talks about struggling to not go off the plan in the first place, as well as getting back on the plan when she doesn't stick to it, as well as working to do what's best for her despite what everyone else is saying and doing. She also maintains a pretty positive attitude throughout the book.

Inspiring, But Risky Advice for Long-term Success

I wish I could give this book a higher rating, because the way the author handled a boss's criticism of her weight is truly inspiring. Instead of consoling herself with food, she launched a plan to get into shape -- but that's where it becomes difficult to get behind her "Shift" approach. A lot of what Johnson does, and endorses, does not seem sustainable for long-term fitness. How realistic is it to say that a glass of wine or an occasional dessert are off limits? How sensible is it to regard carrots and blueberries as "bad"? Why did she give exercise short shrift until late in the program? And why in the world did Johnson agree to her daughter's birthday wish of her mother going off the diet, and not stand up to the sabotage? In short, my concern is that Johnson's all-or-nothing approach will lead some "Shifters" to give up, or else regain their weight when they inevitably encounter a food challenge they have not learned to navigate. A final annoyance: Johnson's gratuitous details about how her marriage benefited from the weight loss. Too much information!
