I am actually Kurt's wife - he gave me this account as a gift, so it is in his name. Audible is awesome!
Yes. It IS very much based on the Bible, but then, if you are looking at this book, you know Rick is a Pastor. As someone that had bad experiences in several churches growing up, and not a fan of God's "fan clubs" (what I call organized religious groups) - I REALLY enjoy Rick's books, podcasts and overall style. Even if you are not a believer in God, there are so many things in this book that are worth hearing and learning. We have to live with 7 billion others on this planet - there are so many gems in this book that are helpful to any human being.
Too many to list....I am listening to it again in fact....
I just LOVE his story-telling style - I think that is my favorite part - he makes learning FUN! He is humorous and down-to-earth. He's the kind of guy you would wanna sit on the porch with a drink a glass of iced tea. Not at all a typical "preacher."
Gosh, way too many to list. Way too many. So many good quotes (not just biblical either) and so many good insights based on common sense...I think that it made me see that life s worth living...which I didn't think it was before.
Give it a listen! Well worth your time!
This is a most Insightful and inspirational book. It's easy to understand and it gives easy to follow directions!
The Biblical base.
First time I have listened to him.
To give thanks & praise to God ALL the time.
I needed this . . . .
This is one o the most inspiration and guiding books I have read to this point in my life. It's explains and expands our 5 purposes that God calls us to in life and 2 of the greatest hinders to that cause, envy and people pleasing.
My greatest takeaway from this book is that God is concerned about the motivation of our heart. Why are you doing the things we are doing? Is God truly at the center on my life?
I say honesty, He is not, but I am trying and the more I commit my actions for His glory the more I know that I become more like His son Jesus and conform to the life-giving purposes for my life.
Thank God, He is patient and kind, and thank God that Jesus died for me so that I can be free even while I was still his enemy and even in my imperfect character. So now, I can pay forward the great love that Christ gave freely to me. Glory to God, my Lord and Savior!
The preaches are very nicely achived, and very well founded. The narrative and the passion of Rick is contagious. But I didn't like that at certain point of the book, little by little, it hints that the purpose of everyone's life is to live in the church, by the church and for the church. The book doesn't show a way to find your purpose, it tries to convince you that everyone 's purpose is the church.
The book inspires to take action and fix several flaws you may have in your path for a more spiritual christian life.
I've enjoyed listening to this book because while it is intended to be read/listened to in 40 days, it's easy to pick back up if you break the pattern. Rick Warren does a good job of explaining his ideas with analogies and short sayings that are easy to remember.
I went into this book based on a recommendation from a friend so I was unsure what to expect. I'm a Christian in every sense of the word and I wanted to find a way to better live my life. After listening to this book my eyes are as the title of my review suggests: Wide open. So many questions I've had were answered and by listening I realized that while I strive to be a good person, I do fall very far from hitting the perfect mark.
Rick does a great job of talking to you and not preaching to you. I think if you have someone telling you what you should do, how you should do it, and then back it all up with Scripture really goes a long way at helping people understand why something should be done. For me it was tithing. My parents did, I know lots of other people who do it, but I never really saw the reason to struggle even more financially by tithing. How wrong I have been.
He has a nice tone and very easy to listen to.
I think the big take away for me is knowing that even though I may not be perfect, I'm not really expected to be. I've learned that worship is very different from what I was taught worship was.
It is practical and easy to apply in my life.
The 7 habit's but more down to earth.
It was very emotional. I changed the way i think.
Please read this book.
I got this book because I feel I am missing a greater purpose in my life and this book seemed to be about that. I was sorely disappointed. There is only one chapter about finding your unique purpose in life, and it's pretty basic. The rest is preaching about joining a church, going to church, recruiting people to go to church... Along with some commonly preached ideas. It's all been said before, I feel like I learned nothing. It's been a month and I already forgot most of what the book was about.
NOFor me the wording and references were too Religious. It was heavy on Bible and Jesus quotes. I respect all religions. I am very spiritual but not religious. It was too difficult to get past the religious tone to hear the message.
I LOVED his interview with Oprah Winfrey. He kept it to a level open to people of all faiths. I was quite disappointed when I started listening to the book.
It was well presented .... music a bit "hokey" and sentimental
I LOVE the idea of a purpose driven life and that is my goal in my life. I have great love and appreciation for Rick Warren in the work he does. It would be of great value to present it in a form that would be accepted by a wider scope of people if he just remove the religious references.....but he IS a Preacher (Minister).Thank you!Peace
"Up and Down"
On the down-side this book sounds like a very long-winded sermon. It's very black and white and Rick often states opinion as fact...which he tries so very hard to justify by continually saying 'the bible says...' and in all honesty there were a fair few times when I felt instead like throwing the bible squarely back at Rick. In a nutshell, when Rick is on form he is undeniably correct and you wil find yourself at the very least actively nodding in agreement. On the other side, Rick can be infuriating to listen to. When he's right he's spot on...otherwide he's totally off the mark. There's no inbetween or grey. For example Rick states that we are 'slaves to God'..on number of occasions his use of language frustrated and even offended. Three stars though because there is a lot of good in this book....best taken in small doses.
Thank you for such an eye opening book. It really helps understand what we are on earth for.
I recommend this book to all.
Less god and more practical advice
It's not a charater driven story with a narative.
Unless you count God as a 1 dimenstional character
The advice was nonsense delivered by sad sound voices. Intercut with sad music every 5-10 which sounds like the sad hulk music
Depressing, disappointing , I have subscribed to a book a month since 2007 and this is the only book I didn't want to finish. I wish I could have had that months credit refunded.
I would recommend seth godin , malcolm gladwell, psycho-cybernetics or the power of habbit over this tripe
