Publisher's Summary

Fear can save your life. It directs you to avoid that stranger, to leave the room, to call for help. The intuitive message of fear, together with rational principles, can help you to predict and thereby avoid personal violence. In this program Gavin de Becker, America's leading expert on predicting violent behavior, demystifies the apparently random and unpredictable nature of violence and shows you how interpersonal violence can be detected and derailed. De Becker's clients include celebrities, corporations, and political organizations, and he serves as an adviser to the CIA and the U.S. Supreme Court.

What the Critics Say

"De Becker has a lot to say about crime and the fear of crime, and he says it persuasively in The Gift of Fear. His blend of empathy, reassurance, and common sense wows [readers], just like it wowed the audience on Oprah." (Newsweek)

    "Try Unabridged Version"

I loved the book enough that I wanted to listen to the audio version as well. I would've given it five stars if it included the full text. Find an unabridged version - the abridged one cuts out too much.

    "Must Listen for Women!"
What made the experience of listening to The Gift of Fear the most enjoyable?

I am a distance runner and spend hours running alone and even though I run on a well known trail in a great part of the city, as a woman, I can never be careful enough. This book has great information on trusting your gut instinct. It gave examples and cues on what to beware of or look out for. My favorite part was that he said it is okay to let anyone know that you are uncomfortable or that you don't talk to strangers. This is a concept you give up around age 13. I learned some great tips and would recommend this book to everyone! I heard about this book from Dr. Jenn Berman on her Cosmo Radio Show. Love!

What other book might you compare The Gift of Fear to and why?

Without Conscience by Robert D. Hare. That book was about getting into the mind of psychopaths. Only that book focused on con men types and this book focuses on your internal fear to guide you.

What does Gavin de Becker bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He sounds very official - his experience as a detective comes through his voice. It's a character in itself.

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

    Hopefully all of them!

    "Interesting book, a bit short"

I wish this book was longer. The author presents some key pieces of information throughout but you feel like you're getting just part of it and missing other segments. Despite this, it was still worth the credit.
He narrates the book himself and does a reasonable job with it.

    "Just and amazing book"

This book was recommended by a friend. It captured my interest in 5 seconds and I wished it could have been longer. I have listened to conversations of fighter pilots, lawyers, doctors, and military vets. This was as interesting as the tails of those interesting people. Just a great read

    "Amazing book"

This is an amazing book that opens up a whole new way of thinking about fear. I'f you have children, it's a must read; along with protecting the gift by the same author. The authors practical good sense approach to this suject of fear, feels right. Any reader ever faced with real danger in their lives will instantly understand that he understands. Time and money well spent.

"This is a must listen for everyone"

Mr. De Becker does an excellent job of explaining why we do what we do, anallizing our thought process, reaction and why. His narration is excellent! Cesar Millan had referenced this book in his book "Be The Pack Leader", also explaining why we react or fail to react. Thank you Mr. De Becker for taking a horrible childhood and turning it into a blessing for so many!

"Or How to Listen to your Intuition and Trust it."

I found this book through an article interviewing Rita Wilson. She quoted from the book and I was intrigued. I am glad I did. I had no idea what it was going to be about, but purchased it anyway. It was interesting read, thoughtful and provoking. A reminder to trust your intuition in many circumstances and not give in to worrying what the outside world will think. If a warning bell goes off, better to take heed. Well narrated kept my attention.
