Meh

Can’t remember why I got this. Fortunately it was short, because it didn’t offer anything original. Guess if you need a pep talk...

It was okay

Sometimes it's good to rehear the things you already know. Everyone says it a bit differently

Do not self sabotage.

I really enjoyed reading Self Discipline. It was an I opener and I was able to identify that I have been self sabotaging myself. I am excited about the revelation revealed through this book and my future.

Good advice, but where’s the science?

The advice was generally good, and there were some clever ideas that could help, but none of it was backed up with any data or science. I prefer to know whether something actually has been shown to work. Finally, i know this might not matter to some people, but I thought it was strange that the presumably female author selected a male narrator to give the advice. I like to think I am listening to the author’s words as they wanted them to be presented, so I found it unfortunate that the author believed such advice would sound better coming from a man.

Develop good habits ...101

If this is your first self help book, then it’s probably going to be a good read/listen. If you’ve read other books (from Stephen Covey to Deepak Chopra as I have) this book will seem basic and almost elementary. During the prologue and first chapter it felt as though the narrator was putting me in a negative trance just so later in the book I’d feel some sort of break through.

As the listener you are given the basics for breaking bad habits, set smaller goals, write things down, consider your past challenges and yes the narrator said more often than I care to recall, “failures”.

I didn’t love it, but someone who is just beginning to figure out what the heck is holding them back might find some nuggets of help in this book.

To the point

A collection of helpful ideas regarding self discipline. Nothing terribly new, but a decent summary. It's decent as far as it goes. For a Christian, this doesn't go deep enough as it only goes as far as loving myself, being gentle to myself, etc. In Christ there exists vastly larger and deeper motivations, affirmations, goals and absolutions to live by than merely myself though.

Pragmatic, pratical, productive!

What did you love best about Self-Discipline?

Good solid advice, learnt a lot of new things I have not seen in other books.

Which character – as performed by Charles Wells – was your favorite?

No characters, it is not a fiction book, but the narration was excellent.

Any additional comments?

I can not praise this book highly enough, it has had a great positive effect on my own life.
