First, you need to understand that the fiction proposal package of query and synopsis isn't about your novel. It's about showing how well you know your target audience, either editor or agent, and how well you're able to address his or her specific needs.
A great query letter gets them to read your synopsis.

Great book
There are quite a few books written on this subject. Do you want to buy a long book or audiobook that is a couple of hours long or do you want someone to cut to the chase in 38 minutes and tell you the basics? If you're reading Grapes of Wrath, you want the full experience... for book queries though, just use the quick version. I almost hesitated due to its short length, but its a high quality book with perfect narration. Very pleased with it.
