Publisher's summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Quiet, the Sunday Times and New York Times best seller by Susan Cain, will permanently change how we see introverts - and how you see yourself.

Our lives are driven by a fact most of us can't name and don't understand: whether we're an introvert or an extrovert. This defines who our friends and lovers are, which careers we choose and whether we blush when we're embarrassed.

At least a third of us are on the introverted side. Some of the world's most talented people are introverts. Without them, we wouldn't have the Apple computer, the theory of relativity and Van Gogh's sunflowers.

Yet extroverts have taken over. Shyness, sensitivity and seriousness are often seen as being negative. Introverts feel reproached for being the way they are.

In Quiet, Susan Cain shows how the brain chemistry of introverts and extroverts differs and how society misunderstands and undervalues introverts. She gives introverts the tools to better understand themselves and take full advantage of their strengths.

Critic reviews

"I can't get Quiet out of my head. It is an important book - so persuasive and timely and heartfelt it should inevitably effect change in schools and offices." (Jon Ronson, The Guardian)

"Susan Cain's Quiet has sparked a quiet revolution...perhaps rather than sitting back and asking people to speak up, managers and company leaders might lean forward and listen." (Megan Walsh, The Times)

"Quiet is a very timely book...maybe the extrovert ideal is no longer as powerful as it was; perhaps it is time we all stopped to listen to the still, small voice of calm." (Daisy Goodwin, The Sunday Times)

So much more than the title suggests

Susan provides a lot more than just good insight into the power of introversion. The book also explains why different personalities behave the way that they do, how to better deal with those personalities and to best use your own personality type to your advantage. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

The book is well written and the voice actor matched the book perfectly, a calm and quiet voice is needed for "quiet"

For people who feel it's an effort to fit in. This is your book

I related to this book so well, that it has encouraged me and made me feel like I can accept myself. For it is as simple as, I am an introvert.

What if you are different?

Would you consider the audio edition of Quiet to be better than the print version?

Using the audio edition meant that I could have the programme running more than I would be if I were reading. However, when using audio, it is much more complicated to turn back/go back to something that is referred to in an earlier chapter.

I think that the listener/reader will have to choose according to their personal situation.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

There is no story - this is a book about psychology.

What about Kathe Mazur’s performance did you like?

I thought that she read very well. Her voice was clear, her pauses were enough to allow me to absorb the information.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

This could only be made into a documentary and as such it would be terrific with the name and tag line that it already has.

Great read!

Really enjoyed the contrast of Extraverts and Introverts. Well researched and good storytelling. A book representing the missing puzzle.
