Editorial reviews

Brian Donovan’s comic tale of his history with Internet dating might seem mean-spirited if the criticism weren’t, in large part, self-deprecating. Donovan, who’s written for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and Chapelle’s Show, mines the deep well of comedic gold that is Internet dating by going on an exorbitant amount of dates with all sorts of women - and a few that he couldn’t even be sure were women. Ax Norman delivers Donovan’s chronicles in a personal tone that feels both instructional and confessional. If you’re one of the millions of people who’ve experienced online dating for yourself, or if you’re a curious outsider, prepare yourself for an insider's look at the widely popular phenomenon and all of the insights into human relationships it provokes.

Publisher's summary

Forty million people in the US have tried Internet dating, which means 40 million people have probably gone on some pretty crappy dates. Not a Match: My True Tales of Online Dating Disasters is about one guy who experienced more than his fair share. Brian Donovan, a writer and comedian whose work has appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, NPR, and Chapelle's Show, has been on over 100 Internet dates in a genuine search for love and happiness.

Don’t date him, just marry him!

This guy is hilarious. I have laughed the whole time. He’s perfect, except he shouldn’t date. Ever. ;)

There is a Reason He's Single

What disappointed you about Not a Match?

The story is about his online dating failures, but rather than blaming the crazy girls, he may want to look at himself to see what the problem is. He reads his own book for us and sounds like a bad stand up comic waiting for us to laugh at the joke that wasn't that funny. I really tried to give this audio book a chance, but it was painful to listen to. A big disappointment.

What could Brian Donovan have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Had a comedian with better material read and write it.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Ax Norman?

Yes

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Not a Match?

His side comments, where he seems to be befriending the reader. Geeky

Pretty Funny Stories

There were a few parts where I laughed out loud. Would recommend to someone who is single and trying to date, or has their own stories to tell.

Funny and informative

Would you listen to Not a Match again? Why?

I would listen to this again - both to hear about the author's dates and to refresh myself on his online dating tips.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked the author because he seemed to be aware of his drawbacks but realized that it wasn't those that were causing the strange behavior in some of his dates.

What does Ax Norman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narrator brought just the right touch of nerdy voice to the story line.

What did you learn from Not a Match that you would use in your daily life?

I learned that it's standard practice for people to be less than truthful in their dating profiles.

Any additional comments?

I would strongly suggest that anyone considering (or currently engaged in) online dating read or listen to this book.

Easy Listening

Well while I didn't really learn much from this story it was very funny and brought a smile and laughter in almost every chapter.

Enjoyable Little Read!

This book managed to be awkward and funny yet sweet as well - the author's bewilderment in some circumstances was hilarious. I have been on similar dates ...this book is worth it!

bleh

What would have made Not a Match better?

Too short, not very entertaining. Most of the information given was common sense.

What could Brian Donovan have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

He could have added more stories, or gone into more detail about them. He tried to be funny throughout, but it came of as pretty lame.

What does Ax Norman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He makes the story as lively as it can be made.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Not a Match?

The final scene doesn't fit. This book was supposed to be about his online dating horror stories, the final story was about he woman he met at work, not the same thing.

Any additional comments?

I only got this because it was offered to me for free, had it not been I would have never bothered. If you can get it for free, check it out. If not, keep on moving!
