Publisher's summary

"Our biggest fear," says poet and Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, "is that we will become nothing when we die. If we think that we cease to exist when we die, we have not looked very deeply at ourselves."

It is possible to live every day without being afraid of what happens when we die. Through a close examination of who we are, how we exist, and how we live, we can conquer our fear to live a freer and happier life. Through stories and lucid teachings, Thich Naht Hanh brings peace of mind to a difficult subject, and shows is how to live a happier life, free of fear.

A true blessing

If you are suffering over the loss of a loved one, these words in this book will bring you peace. If you have the fear of death for you or a loved one, these words will bring you peace. If you value evidence, reason, and logic when looking deeply at the world and this life, these words will bring you peace. These words are remarkable and have led me to practice whole heartedly the wisdom and loving kindness Thich Nhat Hanh and the Buddha share. I have tremendous gratitude for having had the gift of hearing these words. Love

Mesmerizing, Insightful. I am in Awe!

I could not put this book down. It gave me so much insight and helped in easing my fear of so many things in life including death. I was raised Catholic and I always had so many questions. This book simplified and answered many of those questions. Thank you for this blessing.

Extremely helpful

I lost my 14 month old grandson recently and this book is helping me to understand our loss. The narration is pleasant to listen to. I have replayed this book four time and will continue to do so.

the concepts presented in here are things that we all know but we all lose sight of. the practices that are presented here help us to keep these insights firmly in mind and allow us to practice in our daily life the things that lead us away from suffering and toward genuine happiness.

Comforting Indeed

I am fairly new to meditation and Buddhist teachings. I found this book to be full of useful, accessible metaphors to begin understanding the teachings. I also found the tone to be full of kindness and compassion. I look forward to listening to it again.

It's the plain truth; nothing less or more

There is desperation and anguish in not being able to believe your life has purpose and meaning. There are hell-worlds of nihilism or impotent regret that millions fall into for lack courage or willingness (same thing?) to look deeply into the most basic nature of life and existence and our truly, literally, technically inseparability from everything percieved as "not me".

The observations of Tich and many others like him are not too sophisticated to grasp. They are not merely abstract.
You can know the truth if you truly want to.

life may be suffering but most of that suffering is unnecessary and as our hearts and minds grow beyond our own small narratives into the larger ecology we have always been part of, the suffering grows smaller with perspective, eclipsed by awe and gratitude.

Depressing

Normally love Thich Nhat Hanh. Recently lost two loved ones. Found this book to be dreary and oh so depressing. I’m truly confused by the reviews that say that this brought them solace.

The core of the Buddah and works with Christianity

I love this author and read this for a friend who's child is dying of early onset dementia. I'm sending it to her as she has been dealing with it for a year now and I think she will be receptive. We are water not the wave and how when this manifestations time is over we continue on. Very comforting. Beautiful book I am buying hard copy also.
