Publisher's summary

"Our biggest fear," says poet and Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, "is that we will become nothing when we die. If we think that we cease to exist when we die, we have not looked very deeply at ourselves."

It is possible to live every day without being afraid of what happens when we die. Through a close examination of who we are, how we exist, and how we live, we can conquer our fear to live a freer and happier life. Through stories and lucid teachings, Thich Naht Hanh brings peace of mind to a difficult subject, and shows is how to live a happier life, free of fear.

Concrete Wisdom that Touches the Heart

I was surprised how simple and “real” the prose were to me. Buddhist chants like the Heart Sutra or other teachings can seem a bit like woo, or something esoteric and just outside my mind's reach, but not this book. It’s down-to-earth (literally) and the last chapter made me cry. The whole book was very relatable.

Comforting Indeed

I am fairly new to meditation and Buddhist teachings. I found this book to be full of useful, accessible metaphors to begin understanding the teachings. I also found the tone to be full of kindness and compassion. I look forward to listening to it again.

Emptiness and No Self

Thich Nhat Hanh has explained, through plain language and examples, some of the deeper teaching of Buddhism that have confused me prior to this reading. With this help, my understanding has deepened and I believe this will inform my practice to deepen also. "When conditions are sufficient, we manifest, when conditions are not sufficient, we go into hiding." I am not this body. No death, no fear, only continuation.

Mesmerizing, Insightful. I am in Awe!

I could not put this book down. It gave me so much insight and helped in easing my fear of so many things in life including death. I was raised Catholic and I always had so many questions. This book simplified and answered many of those questions. Thank you for this blessing.

Extremely helpful

I lost my 14 month old grandson recently and this book is helping me to understand our loss. The narration is pleasant to listen to. I have replayed this book four time and will continue to do so.

Thick Nhat Hanh

Mr. Hanh has many books, and I read a few of his books, and so far this one is my favorite. Much information and at times repeated a bit often with intention, I believe, to make a very different state of mind clear, which was appreciated. This is a type of book I plan on rereading from time to time for it's importantce of content.
