The Complete Audio Archive of a Beloved Philosopher of the Heart

John O'Donohue was a one-of-a-kind force of nature: a genius with words, a brilliant thinker, and a professional excavator of the soul. Weaving Celtic Wisdom with Personal History

In the oral tradition so beloved of the Celts, John shares his intuitive approach to spirituality in programs such as Anam Cara, which explores Ireland's divine heritage, and Beauty: The Invisible Embrace, which helps us illuminate the beauty we long for. It is an odyssey into our common yearning for the magnificence of nature, for compassion, serenity, and hope, and for the “soul friends” who walk with us along the way.

"John always said that the great miracle of life was not the turning of water into wine nor the parting of the Red Sea, but the fact that there was something rather than nothing," says David Whyte in his introduction. John O'Donohue was a man who rejoiced in all people and all existence, and with commemorating, full-length introductions by close friends Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés and David Whyte, Longing and Belonging celebrates the numerous gifts John shared with so many in his lifetime.

Longing and Belonging includes:

  • Bless the Space Between Us: Blessings of comfort and illumination for the thresholds we all must cross in life
  • Beauty: The Invisible Embrace: Spiritual lessons behind our soul-level hunger for what is beautiful
  • Eternal Echoes: Reflections on our yearning to belong, and our possibilities for self-discovery, friendship, and creativity
  • The Inner Landscape: A Celtic exploration of paradox as a means to find light in the darkest valleys of our inner terrain
  • The Divine Imagination: A pathway to experiencing divinity as a lyrical and tender force present in all things
  • The Invisible World: An odyssey of Celtic prayers, blessings, and teachings that honor the sacred unknown
  • Anam Cara: Deep insights into the heart of Ireland's spiritual wisdom and practice

"Finally-- words that describe my inner landscape"

I am not a person who listens or reads self-help books, or even many books on spirituality or religion. ( Thomas Merton, Richard Rohr, and a few others being the notable exceptions)-- so I approached this warily. I have found though that John O'Donohue's writing describes my experience of Spirit, and his words are expanding my vocabulary for experiences I've had, a way of life I have known, but never managed to express.

I don't imagine his path is one that would speak to all seekers. But if you have been raised with a celtic consciousness, his writing will help to round out your living connection to Spirit and do it in a way that does not conflict with you Christian faith, but rather rounds it out and deepens it.

O'Donahue's voice is clear and musical, with a sort of clear high sound, like the wind working against the ancient stones. It can be a little tiring if you do not listen closely. My suggestion is to take in what he says in short bits. His writing is so full and deep, just like a rich fragrant dish of some delicious food, you don't want to consume it, but rather take it in slowly, and let it work in the hidden parts of your heart, and then go back for more. There is time. There is no need to rush.

Finally I just want to express my profound gratitude for the life and work of this man. He managed to bring together and make sense of the tangle of the celtic consciousness, which is hidden, almost lost in the rush and bright light of modern scientific western thought. -- I am sorry his "clay form" is no longer walking around among us, and yet so grateful that his wisdom has been shared and continues to be heard.

    "My Favorite of All"
If you could sum up Longing and Belonging in three words, what would they be?

    Profound, Spiritual, and Soothing

What did you like best about this story?

The author seems to not leave out any aspect of the human experience--childhood, family, faith, culture, society, humor, love, death, et al.
He was an extremely intelligent man, yet he was also a wonderfully approachable communicator.

What does John O'Donohue bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Having his work on audio makes all the difference. His voice is so very soothing; I love to just lie in bed after a rough day and listen; it takes away all my stress and gives me a brighter perspective and strength to take on the next day.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, I did react to it strongly, though I am not an emotional person. I play and replay it many, many times because everything he says is so profound that I get more out of the recording each time I hear it, or actually I hear just a part of it at a time (though I do not agree with all of O'Donohue's ideas...I think he went a bit out there at times.) I grew up in a parish staffed by kindly Irish priests, so I think that's part of why I find hearing these recordings very soothing.

    Any additional comments?

I am a longtime Audible member and of all my dozens and dozens of audio books I've purchased over the years, this is my favorite (and it's a bargain being several great books in one purchase!). I think I will also give it as a gift on St. Patrick's Day. Yes, it is a great gift for a friend who has any Irish heritage or interest in the Irish culture, or for someone who loves poetry and who is also spiritual, or probably for most Catholics, though O'Donohue was a former priest and some of his ideas seem New Age--ironically something he criticized--he still identified with Catholicism, had (a very early) Catholic funeral, and most certainly spoke in a very pastoral manner throughout this set of recordings.

    "Excellent! Love O'Donohue's Work"
Where does Longing and Belonging rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Very good audio book. I really enjoy the authors work. BUT: With a 31 hour book with multiple items in the collection: WHERE IS A TABLE OF CONTENTS!!!

What other book might you compare Longing and Belonging to and why?

Pretty much one of a kind! Thought provoking work. Would like to be able to search for content: BUT WHERE IS A TABLE OF CONTENTS OR CHAPTER LIST!!!

    Which scene was your favorite?

His thoughts on The Inner Landscape of Beauty and relationships is beautiful. BUT: WHERE IS A TABLE OF CONTENTS!!!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. 31 Hours long.... NEEDS A TABLE OF CONTENTS!!!

    Any additional comments?

WHERE IS A TABLE OF CONTENTS OR CHAPTER LISTING? ~ Really great content but impossible to navigate without a chapter listing of contents.

    "Beautifully Moving Listen"
What made the experience of listening to Longing and Belonging the most enjoyable?

The author's love of humanity came across with confident phrases, ideas, and sentiments, such as: "there is something quiet and shy in the human soul that we must attend to."

What was one of the most memorable moments of Longing and Belonging?

The story about someone trying to ruin a farmer's potato harvest, at it's most fecund moment, and the lack of explanation as to why anyone would do such a thing.

What does John O'Donohue bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His voice is beautiful and a pleasure to listen to. Additionally, many parts were a pleasure to listen to with closed eyes.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from Longing and Belonging?

That our individuality wants to figure out how to be a part of everything while maintaining our uniqueness.

    Any additional comments?

I am lucky to have come across this work. It was of high quality and at times I was overwhelmed and expected answers that were beyond my reach.

"John O'Donohue Made the World a Richer Place"
What did you love best about Longing and Belonging?

    Speaks straight to the soul.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Longing and Belonging?

I took many quotes from it but none in front of me at this moment. I listen to this especially during those times when I feel like I need mentoring from someone very wise. I was lucky enough to take some classes from John when he was alive. He transformed the world into poetry. It seemed innate to who he was.

Have you listened to any of John O'Donohue’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

It's been such a long time since I've heard him in person that I can't remember any more why his voice on tape sounded radically different. It's probably because he speaks so slowly on recordings; perhaps someone advised him to make sure we can understand him through the beautiful Irish accent? I don't notice the difference any more.

    Any additional comments?

You can never go wrong with John O'Donohue. He left us too soon. If my review sounds overly glowing, listen for yourself and see what I mean.

    "Absolute dissapointment"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I hated this book. I took it from audible.com to experiment with a new area of knowledge and impressed by the description on Amazon. Rather, this book is more like a repeat rambling that feigns knowledge of Celtic traditions and beliefs and doesn't have any credible or enjoyable narrative. I didn't see any genius or brilliant thinking in whatever the author said. It rather numbed my brain to hear the author repeat "I believe" and then repeat something absurd.

What could John O'Donohue have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    Put something more meaningful.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

    It was meaningless rambling.

What character would you cut from Longing and Belonging?

    The author himself.

    David Whyte's.

This should be compulsory listening for all people trying to grow into themselves - that is, everyone.
