Some families are created in different ways but are still, in every way, a family.
Writer and star of My Big Fat Greek Wedding Nia Vardalos firmly believed she was supposed to be a mom, but Mother Nature and modern medicine had put her in a headlock. So she made a choice that shocked friends, family, and even herself: with only 14 hours' notice, she adopted a preschooler.
Instant Mom is Vardalos' hilarious and poignant true chronicle of trying to become a mother while fielding nosy "frenemies" and Hollywood reporters asking, "Any baby news?" With her signature wit and candor, she describes her and husband Ian Gomez's bumpy road to parenting, how they found their daughter, and what happened next. Vardalos includes a comprehensive how-to-adopt section and explores innovative ways to conquer the challenges all new moms face, from sleep to personal grooming. She learns that whether via biology, relationship, or adoption - motherhood comes in many forms.
In Instant Mom, Vardalos shares the terrifying joys of parenthood and for the first time reveals her stubborn optimism and perseverance on her trek to finally becoming a mom, instantly.

It's nice to find a book that focuses on adopting through foster care, since there are not many. And having someone's personal experience is insightful. Although it could have done without all the name dropping and bragging...
Instant Mom is an honest heartfelt and funny book about an inceadible quest for parenthood. It recognizes frustrations of the IVF path and the unique challenges of adopting through the foster-care system while conveying why it is totally worth the effort. It is so refreshing to hear an open and honest story - rather than many of the others that either paint this option as a horror story or fairy tale.
Nia's sense of humor and style both writing and performing the story for the audio book made it a fun and engaging listen.
I loved most of the book, but I particularly enjoyed the sections detailing her smart & creative solutions to behaviors by her daugheter and others. There are many wise & brilliant gems that you will want to steal!
There were many, many, MANY parts of this book that hit home really hard and caught me off gaurd emotionally. In my own 5 year (so far) quest for parenthood, I've done a pretty good job of keeping it together (staying calm, cool, and collected). These parts of the book (lots of them) were good to hear for the obvious informational content, but more impartantly for my unexpected emotional reaction as an amazing self-discovery that I have been masking some of my true feelings on the issue. I'm not really one to cry, but I cried - A LOT. This reaction and associated realizations sparked great conversations with my husband.
Thank you Nia - I want to hug you!
