Worth it, even though it needs pro recording!

If you could sum up How Al-Anon Works for Families and Friends of Alcoholics in three words, what would they be?

Real help is available

What did you like best about this story?

Could relate on many levels. Applies to many situations. Logically organized. Lets you know what to expect from a meeting, as well as how to apply help to your own situation, no matter what it is. Covers a lot of ground.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Anonymous members of Al-Anon Family Groups?

ANYBODY that is a professional book narrator in a real studio!!! Think Barbara Rosenblatt would be great.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listened for hours, and went back to listen to parts of it over again. This is the kind of book that you can listen to multiple times and get a lot more info from at each hearing.

Any additional comments?

I understand that they wanted to use "real people/members," so that it would be more relatable and honest. But frankly, the recording quality suffers enormously, and many of the narrators are too stilted. I ended up downloading it again at the highest recording quality and it still took me a long time to be able to stop wincing at the poor audio quality. It is frankly sometimes difficult to hear, especially since I like to listen while driving. I am spoiled by the quality of professional audiobooks, I realize. But this is one area where I feel that Al-Anon needs to break down and turn something this important over to professional book narrators and sound engineers. Still, the material itself is invaluable, and I will be listening to this again and again. I hope others will also petition Al-Anon to re-do this professionally, and to release more Conference Approved Literature in audio formats. They are sorely behind the times in making material available in electronic and audio formats.

Terrible audio quality

I can't really rate the story. The audio quality is so poor that we gave up after about 45 minutes!

Poor audio quality

It's a wonderful material for friends and relatives of problem drinkers; however, I found the recording quality quite unbearable.

This Proves It: Not Everyone Should Narrate

While the message of this book is meaningful and important, it is read by a group of members with no experience as narrators and in an environment that sounds like a home tape recorder was used. Despite posted reviews stating this, I thought 'how bad can it be?' The truth is that, for me, the message was lost as the audio is so bad that it becomes painful to keep listening. It is unfortunate that Al-Anon has not invested in some professional narration and a higher recording quality which would go a long way in spreading their message more effectively. My recommendation is to skip this audio book and read it instead.

Many voices, much help

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to all the voices reading all the stories of Al-anon recovery. This is not a professionally read book and there are a few times when readers make slight errors, which lends reality to the book. I loved it and will continue to listen to it over and over again .

Very good presentation

I enjoyed the book. I had some hesitation in getting because of the reports of poor audio / narration, however anyone who has ever been to meetings, having people read around the room is exactly how it is done - and expected for anyone having participated in meetings and listening to this book.
It is a culmination of discussion of the 12 steps, stories, shares, and some meeting / organization protocol.
The audio book has a listing of chapters, however are not named, so audio sampling, book for reference, or favorite # memorized is necessary for repeat specific listening. A very worthwhile audio book.

Loved it!!

The audible speakers provided real life situations that happen on a day to day basis. How he/she overcame their short comings as well as their loved one addiction and really began to enjoy living life for the first time. This audible is a self-help tool for anyone it speaks to all ethnic races, gender, and social status.

Very helpful

Any additional comments?

This book is very helpful. The audio is not professionally polished but I like that many different members' voices come together in this audio book. It makes for a feeling of connection with the many people that are walking through similar experiences.
