Healing the Shame That Binds You is the most enduring work of family relationship expert and New York Times best-selling author John Bradshaw. In it, he shows how unhealthy toxic shame, often learned young and maintained into adulthood, is the core component in our compulsions, co-dependencies, addictions and drive to superachieve. While positive shame empowers us and sustains the fabric of our social system, inappropriate or misdirected shame results in the breakdown of our self-esteem, the destruction of the family system, and an inability to move forward with our lives. In an honest and emotionally revealing style based largely on his personal experience with addiction and his decades as a counselor, John Bradshaw moves from the source and manifestation of toxic shame to the practical tools---affirmations, visualizations, inner voice and feeling work, guided meditations, and other healing techniques---that will release the shame that binds us to our past.

I am , it's difficult to follow everything so I'm listening to it again.
It's not that type of book - this is a textbook really
I am able to identify where I have carried shame in my own life.
Again, this is pretty much a text book. Don't expect it to roll like the catcher in the rye. There are parts that won't apply to you but the parts that do may make it all worth it.
If you have experienced tragedy, in any way in your life, THEN READING THIS BOOK IS A MUST. It opens your eyes to understanding what you went through, why you went through it, and how to not only survive it, but overcome it and prosper. Great Book.
Yes ---held my attention----my mind tends to wonder when I read and I find myself rereading certain parts
the truth about shame --the toxic
Really like Pruden's presentation-----the manner the book was read helped me visualize so many of the concepts
Both....cry primarily ----I truly identified with the writings and work of James Bradshaw
Truly the book I have searched for years to answer my questions about why I and others responds to situations the way we do-----Thank you so much for this informative and interesting audio book! I listened whenever I had a spare moment---then listened to the audio book a second time.....
listen then evaluate the context without over processing you life.
....then listen again an again for your thoughts and move through the process of healing shame an embrace the intended purpose of your inner person.
I can't believe how much I learned from this book. It was like a mirror where I said yes yes yes.
Easy to read and understand
No. A bit dry and boring in comparison to Homecoming & Bradshaw's other books.
No particular character. This is a book on information.
Good book, just not as helpful as some of Bradshaw's other books. He seems to have become much less spiritual in his approach to healing.
overall I like and agree with the concepts taught and the way he teaches them but I got really tired of all his examples coming from. one client's life. started just skipping the story sections
This books should be renamed SHADOW PIERCER. It helps (I listen it when ever the shadows get too anonymous) me name my demons and welcome them with open arms like teachers from the beyond. Thank you Bradshaw and audible for bringing this to me...
I really really enjoyed the book and found it helpful to understand my issues I was struggling with.
This it seems taboo subject is well tacked by Bradshaw. The book covers many elements of shame and will assist the reader who needs greater insights into how such a powerful debilitating emotion can grip ones life. First steps to healing are in understanding.
"One of the most profound soul searching books there is"
