Publisher's summary

Healing the Shame That Binds You is the most enduring work of family relationship expert and New York Times best-selling author John Bradshaw. In it, he shows how unhealthy toxic shame, often learned young and maintained into adulthood, is the core component in our compulsions, co-dependencies, addictions and drive to superachieve. While positive shame empowers us and sustains the fabric of our social system, inappropriate or misdirected shame results in the breakdown of our self-esteem, the destruction of the family system, and an inability to move forward with our lives. In an honest and emotionally revealing style based largely on his personal experience with addiction and his decades as a counselor, John Bradshaw moves from the source and manifestation of toxic shame to the practical tools---affirmations, visualizations, inner voice and feeling work, guided meditations, and other healing techniques---that will release the shame that binds us to our past.

Do you feel like you're different than everyone else, if so, read this book.

I have never found so much helpful information in one location at the same time. Although some of it may not be pleasant, you will learn so much about yourself. I can accept anything, as long as I understand it. Not understanding has held me back for so long but not anymore.

I thought it was worth my time

Would you listen to Healing the Shame that Binds You again? Why?

I am , it's difficult to follow everything so I'm listening to it again.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Healing the Shame that Binds You?

.

Which character – as performed by John Pruden – was your favorite?

It's not that type of book - this is a textbook really

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

I am able to identify where I have carried shame in my own life.

Any additional comments?

Again, this is pretty much a text book. Don't expect it to roll like the catcher in the rye. There are parts that won't apply to you but the parts that do may make it all worth it.

Too religious and about 12 steps

There were some good things in it, but it was too religious. He talks also about going to twelve step meeting. Those 12 steps are just about God and are outdated. He says that 12steps have a high succes rate, but they have only 5-10% success rate.. A better book about healing shame is from Brene Brown: The power of vulnerability. Her books isn’t religious.

One of the most insightful books I’ve ever read

This book needs to be shared with the all of humanity. John Bradshaw’s articulate, brilliant yet so tender explanations of how shame not only develops but can go from a healthy guiding force to the utter destruction of our authentic self to the whole of the way we can do torturously live out very sad, unfulfilling and harmful adult lives...

Where have I been that I only found this man and his pioneering work, now! What a gift.

Valuable information, but gruesome at times

Is there anything you would change about this book?

There were more very extreme gruesome examples than necessary, which seemed more harmful than informative at times. These examples were honestly haunting and did not have enough resolution or education information attached to them to be helpful/informative.

Would you recommend Healing the Shame That Binds You to your friends? Why or why not?

I think the book might actually be re-traumatizing for many survivors. This is really unfortunate, as there is some very good information that otherwise could be helpful.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Absolutely not.

a disappointment!

Unless you want to feel like your in church and you should have your hand slapped for taking an extra sip of wine..... not for you. If I wanted to go to church I would of bought a book about it. I didn't need a sermon! I just wanted some good insight.

Meditation and Talking to people

Meditation and Talking to people ended up being the solution the author proposed - I think there is more to the issue than this.
