Jim Daly, president and CEO of Focus on the Family, is an expert in fatherhood - in part because his own 'fathers' failed him so badly. His biological dad was an alcoholic. His stepfather deserted him. His foster father accused Jim of trying to kill him. All were out of Jim's life by the time he turned 13. Isn't it odd - and reminiscent of the hand of God - that the director of the leading organization on family turned out to be a guy whose own background as a kid and son were pretty messed up?

We have a tendency today to over-parent, micromanage, and underappreciate our adolescents. Dr. John Duffy's The Available Parent is a revolutionary approach to taking care of teens and tweens. The available parent of a teenager is open to discussion, offering advice and solutions but not insisting on them. He allows his child to make some mistakes, setting limits, primarily where health and safety are concerned. He never lectures - he is available but not controlling. Listen with a Critical Mind
This book is okay. I've read many parenting books and there's little here that's good that I haven't heard before...but some of what's on here is just...not good.
Example: The writer portrays a parenting scenario of a child being disrespectful to her mother on a Saturday morning. The parent does nothing, keeping a cool head and ignoring the teen. Saturday evening when the teen asks for mom's car keys, mom has made sure to have them in her pocket, and says "no." "But why," the girl inquires? "Because I didn't like being disrespected this morning," the parent replies.
This is supposed to be an example of an effective deterrent...waiting 9 hours to stick it to a kid is not likely to improve their relationship, or teach self-control or respect, in my opinion. And there are a number of similar suggestions that I might find laughable in a parenting book, if it wasn't all so disappointing.
Then there's the fact that the author mentions your child may need to be moved to a different school or even a different city for any changes to work with him/her...so much for having a new teen by Friday.

Practical Advice That Actually Works
We have a 15 year old boy who has been giving my wife and I quite a challenge. He's been openly defiant and having tantrums that were getting out of control.
Have a New Teenager by Friday was just what I needed to hear. My wife and I both listened and we quickly could see that our strongarm tactics weren't working for many reasons. We changed our approach drastically by removing a lot of the limits that we had previously on his cell phone, video games, and his chore list. These steps were big steps forward in improving his trust level with us.
But the biggest improvement was seen when we both stopped engaging him in arguments. In the past it was like arguing with an alien--because he didn't make any sense and we were trying to point out all the holes in his argument. It just escalated and it didn't ever result in a good solution.
Dr. Leman's advice to stop arguing, just remove yourself from the situation is genius. We've found that after our son calms down we can actually have a real discussion and move forward. He doesn't have animosity, just a logical brain again. It's made it much harder for blow-ups to get out of hand.
This is a very good book and it has improved things around our house greatly.

advice seems ok if you get passed author's issues
Don't bother to read this if you can't stand religious based sexism and homophobic stances. I had to stop a few chapters in because of the author's stance of hate.

Narcissistic overly-christian pandering drivel
All about selling his other books and saying his own name. I couldn't get past chapter 12. It just kept getting more self absorbed and more about his religion. a typical sentence included his name, a bible quite, and a recommendation to buy a book. In other words, I'm a Dr and smarter than you so God and I decided you should give me more of your money.

Are you Kidding?
Is there anything you would change about this book?
While I like Dr. Leman, the title and premise of this book is ridiculous, unethical and dishonest. You cannot change anyone, including yourself and especially your teenager within 5 days. Dr. Leman states that parents hold all the cards to change the teen. This is not true. While parents hold significant influence, parents are not the only variables in the lives of teenagers.
Some good practical advice but often simplistic answers. Again, I like Dr. Leman as a person and therapist, but parents should not believe this is all that needs to happen for significant change to occur. Beware of parental guilt if things do not work out by Friday afternoon.
Dr. W.
What does Kirby Heybourne bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Well read.
Do you think Have a New Teenager by Friday needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No.

Great Help For Desperate Parents
If you could sum up Have a New Teenager by Friday in three words, what would they be?
Respond don't react!
What other book might you compare Have a New Teenager by Friday to and why?
The 5 Love Languages of Teenagers by Gary Chapman. Both books remind parents that our teens are going through many changes and we should be there to "guide" them to adulthood, not "dictate" them to it. Both books are Christian based without being "preachy".
What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?
"Purposive behavior" - what is it my teen wants to accomplish from her behavior?

This book has changed me & my teen!
To be honest, I needed this book to acknowledge my poor parenting strategies and go to’s. I have shifted my approach and have seen great change in my kid because I am choosing to do the hard work and change myself first. I grew up without examples of healthy parenting so I am learning how to be the strong, loving parent that is not an authoritarian and is breathing life into my kids vs them filling my sails with the wind of anger. It’s hard but good! I just wish I started far sooner, but better late than never.

Gender stereotypes
I was put off by the books constant reference to "if you are a mom you will ... but dad's ..." And "for girls you should... but boys need..." I did not realize that this book fell under the religious section when I bought it but I was looking for modern day secular advice and felt it was unrealistic with simplistic solutions and not what I expected. I guess in hindsight, I should have known based on the topic it was an oversell. I stopped listening after a few hours. I'm giving it two instead of one stars because I believe the author has his heart in the right place and also because I think if someone lived in a small town in a traditional family situation (married parentts, stay at home mom, observant Christian family), this might be dead on.

Not Scientific and Largely Inaccurate
Science: social media leads to anxiety in adolescents; birth order doesn’t determine personality; abstinence only education doesn’t work, cohorts have a greater influence on teens than parents. Author: social media is innocuous, birth order determines personality, abstinence only is what you should teach, you have more influence than your child's friends. The author seems oblivious of solid research out there even I am aware of that shoot down his trite parenting clichés. This book has some decent advice which I appreciated, but it was mostly gender stereotypes and religious nonsense. Far from scientific studies that can help you guide your children. The author seems out of touch with the latest research on the subject and gives flagrantly incorrect advice. I guess it is fitting that he constantly refers to what a bad student he was.
