Publisher's summary

Did you know that French women don't date?

American women have been missing out on a few secrets when it comes to the opposite sex. French women believe that the gift for attracting men has nothing to do with beauty, work, or even motivation. There are no rules. And they don't listen to Dr. Phil's advice. They don't worry about the care and feeding of their boyfriend. And they certainly don't travel to Mars to communicate with men. On the contrary, French women's love lives are romantic, sensual, playful, and intense. They conduct their relationships with the same unique sense of originality and artfulness that they choose their clothes and accessories. For the first time ever, Jamie Cat Callan gives listeners a personalized, guided tour through the corridors of French love.

Discover the secrets to:

  • Why French women always feel sexy
  • The French art of flirtation
  • Why French women walk everywhere and love to be seen
  • Where French women meet men
  • What French women do when their man misbehaves

Just as we've learned to stop torturing ourselves with fad diets and have relearned the art of eating, this witty, insightful, and candid audiobook strives to show American women how to cultivate and enjoy the pleasures of love, romance, and marriage.

Is this a joke?

Would you try another book from Jamie Cat Callan and/or Laura Darrell?

Absolutely not. I am going to avoid them both like my cat avoids the vacuum cleaner.

What was most disappointing about Jamie Cat Callan’s story?

Well, let's see. It could be the fact that in the first hour and a half, the only information relevant to this book's stated topic is that French women don't go on dates (they meet at group dinner parties and a first date might be a walk in the park). Or it could be the constant intolerable caricatures of what is French vs. what is American. Or it could be the self-satisfied tone of a preachy author who in reality has little to no experience with what she's writing about. Or it could be the bad writing. I'm at a loss. You choose.

How could the performance have been better?

It could have been better if the person chosen to read a book which is heavy on French words could actually pronounce those words. Possibly the most horrendous performance I have ever heard on Audible.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from French Women Don't Sleep Alone?

The whole freaking thing. Though to be fair, I'm only about an hour and a half into the book. So at least the entire first hour and a half. Did this book even have an editor?

Any additional comments?

I am no quitter when it comes to audiobooks. I'm a slogger, I slog through even the disappointing performances and the driest prose. But holy cow, the endless blather about god-knows-what completely unrelated page-filler nonsense! I don't really need to know how to cook a rabbit! Maybe I should have waited until tomorrow to write this review. I just now turned it off when I just couldn't take it anymore and I was beginning to have homicidal thoughts. How this book ever got positive reviews, either on Audible or Amazon is way, way, way beyond my understanding. Sure, I'd rather listen to this book than have a hot poker in my eye, but either one would constitute torture.

Great advice...annoying narrator

Jamie Cat Callan makes becoming French easy and comprehensible to the American woman with fun stories, recipes, and study guides at the end of every chapter.

However, it was hard to listen to because of Laura Darrell's voice. Not only did her over-articulation on everything make it grating to my ears, but her slow speech caused her to drone on, which made me want to turn it off.

I didn't, because I liked the material, and instead powered thru by listening at 1.35 x the normal speed. Still annoying but easier to take and at least I made it thru.

Light and Fluffy Fun

I liked this book for what it was and didn't take it too seriously. I had just read and loved Bringing Up Bebe and wanted another American in France book. Contrary to some of the other reviews, I enjoyed hearing Callan's opinions. I have to admit, I even threw on a pair of wedge heels and lip gloss (with my otherwise casual denim shorts and ponytail) instead of my normal flip flops on the way to the grocery store. This was just for fun since I am engaged and not seeking a date, and I got complimented by a guy just as soon as I walked through the door. The next day, I made one of the recipes (the chocolate banana one), and my fiancé and I both loved it. I might just listen to it again. It's vacation season, and I am in the mood for light, fun, and even sometimes a little silly.

Practical Advice for Living a Feminine Life from a French Perspective

I enjoyed this book because it reminded me to consider that there are other attitudes about meeting people and being feminine from a culture that values pleasure and romance. Great ideas about flirting with every aspect of our lives - from wearing lingerie for our own confidence, to showing interest in the lives of others and even just taking your book to read in a cute coffee shop.

Yikes! Stay Away

Many red flags: French women cook, clean, stay at home and look pretty ONLY.

No 21st century western adaptation in terms of looks, work, raising children, or mention of physical difference.
If you’re a 21year old white American girl, who’s able to find “feminine” clothing in vintage shops, and has no aspiration beyond cooking for your man - this is your book! Remember to look pretty. ALWAYS

Light entertainment

Performance was very good and it was a fun, humorous read about French culture for single women as compared to American women. I enjoyed it but it wasn't ground-breaking.

Take with the largest grain of salt

Not for vegans, feminists, or anyone who spends weekends in sweats. I've traveled extensively across the world so am very familiar with many of these customs, not unique to French women. There are some decent lessons in here for American women who don't know that there's a better way to live. A friend recommended this book because I have never subscribed to American dating, but I'm Latina, so I don't suffer as some American women do. 🙃

I 2nd everything reviewer Suma wrote on 07-03-14

After coming off the high of listening to Bringing up Bebe (superb!) and French Women Don't Get Fat (also very good) I feel this is disappointing, at best.

The narrator sounds like a high school girl in a poorly produced play. But theatrical narration aside, the substance is just not substantial enough for a book. This whole book could have been summed up in an article. This author also manages to caricaturize both American and French women. Most American women like being feminine and dressing up for work, I don't know where she gets her information from.

This book is preaching way too much

I read this book in few days some advices are good but overall i felt like it was a waste of time. I am american and american culture and way of life is different. Its good idea to look and know how other cultures do it but copying it blindly is a little extreme. Online dating is not a bad tool to find your partner as long as you use it right. In regards to food yes it's a good advice to ditch unhealthy fast food and learn how to enjoy home made healthy meal.
