Perhaps the most powerful influence in the world is that of a dad on his child. Baseball gloves, dirty diapers, tiny little hands, first days of school, daddy-daughter dances, and learner's permits ... and so much more! There's no way you can be ready for it all, but this is when you need to get a bit of a head start.
First Time Dad by Focus on the Family ministry veteran (and father of 6) John Fuller lets you in on the stuff you really need to know ... because in just a few months or weeks or days, your life is going to change - forever.
- Set good priorities.
- Break bad habits and/or family patterns.
- Recognize and recover from some common fathering mistakes.
- Know that your words have immense power.
- And learn how to cultivate a lasting parent-child relationship.
So, instead of wondering "oh man, oh man, oh man... what am I going to do now" for 9 months ... listen to this short book (plus it's pretty fun too) and get excited!
Dad, your job is critical ... And you can do it.

It does have a nice “Christian” overtone (not too heavy though) which I appreciate. The book helps us to steer and guide our children through a lot of the cultural and societal challenges of today.
I also really appreciated the last chapter, Blink, in which the author really brings home the point of how fast these parenting years will go by. Here are some great additional chapters as well:
- Chapter 5: How to Survive a New Baby
- Chapter 6: Loving Your Wife
- Chapter 7: Loving Your Baby’s Mother
- Chapter 8: Boys and Girls
- Chapter 10: The Very Keys to Your Child’s Heart
- Chapter 11: Spiritual Information
There’s no guarantee that our children will turn out and grow up to be any particular way, but the ideal is to be as engaged, as involved as possible. Of course, it’s also very important to have a loving family environment in which to have a wonderful spouse that you both can be loving and supportive and the overall care of the children. The author has an excellent chapter on being a supportive spouse as well.
I highly recommend this book for parents, especially men, not just as a beginning, but as a refresher throughout the parenting years for your children.
A Great Refresher for all Dads!
