Editorial reviews

For anyone driven to the brink by his or her canine, author Randy Grim presents this unlikely, but practical guide. Don't Dump the Dog is brimming with Grim's acerbic wit and good-natured take on doggy behavioral issues, giving dog owners a chance to relax and share a laugh. Performer Erik Synnestvedt is bright and playful, seamlessly blending clever quips with more serious subject matter concerning abandoned dogs and overcrowded shelters. A decorated advocate for four-legged friends, Grim backs up his practical advice with years' worth of research and instructive anecdotes.

Publisher's summary

Good advice - "Dear Abby" style - for bad dog owners.

Do you want to dump your dog because he tries to escape your yard? Barks too much? You-know-whats in the house? Doesn’t play well with others? Chewed up your favorite pair of shoes? You wouldn’t be the first person asking to “return” your pet. And dog rescuer Randy Grim has heard every reason under the sun. But before you load Fido into the back of your car, listen to this book.

In it, Randy addresses the concerns of dog guardians everywhere by responding to letters that he’s actually received. With humor, and from his vast experiences with abandoned dogs, he reveals exactly what you can do to remain calm and fix every bad behavior problem. (Even if it means dumping your husband instead of the dog.)

WHEN YOU TAKE A DOG INTO YOUR FAMILY,

SHE BECOMES A REAL MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY
Probably the most important statement in the book. I used to tell my wife that I did not trust people who did not own dogs. My wife categorized them as selfish. This book made me glad these people do not have dogs. To hear how people treat dogs is disgusting. My wife and I have been married for over 36 years and we have always had dogs. We have found like (Marley) the dogs you love the most are usually the most damaged and hardest to deal with. We have always prided ourselves in not being quitters.

I learned a few thing in this book, to help me with my present dogs and wish I would have known some of this with some of our earlier dogs and I am sure it will help with future dogs.

This is not only a how to book, but it is full of lots of humor which makes the learning more fun. I highly recommend this to people who have dogs or are thinking about getting dogs, They are a lot bigger commitment then the average person realizes. A commitment that can last 15 years are more.

Learn about your Dog while Laughing

As the father of a veterinarian I know all about stray dogs making it into the house for the last 20 years (four of them currently). Yet, I was able to learn a lot about Dog behavior in this book.
As a welcomed bonus, I was laughing out loud while doing it. Maybe because I have experienced some of the situations Randy explained, I was laughing so hard I had to pull over a couple of times before I had an accident. Furthermore, the way Randy makes light of a serious situation (people dumping dogs) without diminishing its importance is masterful.

If you are an animal lover, own a dog, are thinking of owning a dog or rescue stray animals,
you must read this book for the knowledge and for the FUN OF IT!

I will be giving a copy of this book with every dog we are able to place.

Pretty Good

I have bought several training books and this was one of the best read out there.

This is a really high quality recording.

One note about dog training every trainer is different. No matter what book you get you will have to use and implement techniques that you are comfortable with. With that said this book is not ground breaking . But the delivery is great. It is funny and will give you some great insight into the word of rescues.

More of a comedy book.

What did you like best about Don't Dump the Dog? What did you like least?

He was pretty funny. I laughed quite a bit. Unfortunately, I was looking for useful info. He left HUGE holes. Train the dog to play fetch. HOW? I have tried and tried. My dog has her own crazy way of playing, none of which is useful to me.

If you’ve listened to books by Melinda Roth and Randy Grim before, how does this one compare?

NA

What aspect of Erik Synnestvedt’s performance would you have changed?

He was trying a little hard.

Do you think Don't Dump the Dog needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No thoughts one way or the other.

It ain't the dog it's the owner

Most problems with dogs are the owners. When you get a dog they train you and choose there masters. I have always loved that a dog will choose who it will obey. This was a great book for all dog lovers.

A Dog Lover's/Liker's Must Read/Listen To

This book shed much-needed light onto canine behavior. I have struggled with issues relating to two of my rescue dogs, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to listen to Randy's advice and humorous stories. He should receive a congressional/presidential/important medal of some sort for this book and his work with animal rescue. Seriously.

Bad training advice but entertaining anecdotes.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

More up-to-date training and behaviour modification techniques.

Any additional comments?

Although the training advice in this book isn't great I do really like the intent of this book and the writer's sarcastic writing. It is really entertaining but it makes me cringe each time I hear about the author using extremely outdated terminology, practices and theory.
