"Insightful & healing"
This is a transformational book that moved me. It discusses how some of us are brought up without being able to develop our emotions, as a defence against our hostile environment. This applies equally to experiences later in life with personal relationships and competitive work environments.
It encourages us to become more self focused and aware. Allowing us to heal and feel we are enough as we are, instead of catering to those around us to appease their unpredicable moods. It empowers us to disentangle ourselves from the emotions of others, drawing boundaries between what we will and will not accept. To feel confident saying: I need to think, I don't know how I will feel about that.
Like many developmental theories, there is much focus on the mother's role in nurturing. However, society changes. In future people will talk of the role of both men and women in raising children.
Codependents focus on the needs of others. The book encourages you to change your perception of the world. It reminds me of how Asian culture is focused on obligation to family and society. But as people become more Westernised, there is more focus on the individual.
Many extreme personalities believe they are too old to change now. That is their loss. There is a whole world out there. The view we were born with is just one perspective of our possible future. Go explore the world and discover what you truly want to be.
