Publisher's summary

Cesar Millan - nationally recognized dog expert - helps you see the world through the eyes of your dog so you can finally eliminate problem behaviors. From his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show to his roster of celebrity clients to his reality television series, Cesar Millan is America’s most sought-after dog-behavior expert. But Cesar is not a trainer in the traditional sense - his expertise lies in his unique ability to comprehend dog psychology. Tracing his own amazing journey from a clay-walled farm in Mexico to the celebrity palaces of Los Angeles, Cesar recounts how he learned what makes dogs tick.

In Cesar’s Way, he shares this wisdom, laying the groundwork for you to have stronger, more satisfying relationships with your canine companions. Cesar’s formula for a contented and balanced dog seems impossibly simple: exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order. Taking listeners through the basics of dog psychology and behavior, Cesar shares the inside details of some of his most fascinating cases, using them to illustrate how common behavior issues develop and, more important, how they can be corrected.

You'll learn:

  • What your dog really needs may not be what you’re giving him
  • Why a dog’s natural pack instincts are the key to your happy relationship
  • How to relate to your dog on a canine level
  • There are no “problem breeds,” just problem owners
  • How to choose a dog who’s right for you and your family
  • The difference between discipline and punishment
  • And much more!

Filled with fascinating anecdotes about Cesar’s longtime clients, and including forewords by the president of the International Association of Canine Professionals and Jada Pinkett Smith, this is the only book you’ll need to forge a stronger, more rewarding connection with your four-legged companion.

An Audible for Dogs Pick: Make your dog's day. Cesar Millan shares how audiobooks can make dogs happier and calmer. Learn more.

Life changing!!

This book was absolutely amazing! I love how Cesar told his story and how he gave so many real life examples of how to be a pack great leader! I am a dog breeder and I have many dogs at my house from Rottweiler’s, Presa Canarios and French bulldogs; this book truly helped me to become a better Pac leader and breeder personally for me. This was life-changing!!! I highly recommend this book to all dog owners.

A Cesar bio (not a training guide)

This book is a star-studded resume builder for Cesar. I picked it up to learn more about dog training, I now know a lot about which celebrities he’s worked with.

Excellent but falls a smidge short

Any additional comments?

This book is an excellent source for both a high-level summary of Cesar Milan's methods and a biography of his life leading up to his show becoming the mega-hit it became.

The first half (yes HALF) of the book is basically a biography. It's fascinating, but I mention it here in this way because I think for a book I was expecting to be entirely about Milan's dog training / psychology / behavior methodology, dedicated 50% of the book to Cesar's bio seems a little excessive. Don't get me wrong, he has had an incredible journey, but I'd rather have read that in a separate biography book and have gotten a lot more advice about working with dogs in this book with the real estate that got allotted to the bio.

The only other major complaint I have is that there are many concepts that stop just short of you being able to actually put them to use. For example, there is a section on barking. Cesar's rule is that you can allow as much or as little barking as you want. For him, he allows one bark. Just one. And that's it. You can do the same. And then the book moves on. "Wait, what? How? How do I do that?" The book never explains how to actually get your dog to only bark once, or not at all. It just says you can decide and then moves on without giving you the actionable information you need to use it.

Despite this two issues (too much bio, occasional lack of follow-through), the book is quite good and really helpful. I know a lot of folks dislike Cesar and disagree with his methods and style, but I don't. I think he genuinely loves dogs and has developed a way to interact with them that works. His "SHHH!" command alone has been worth it for me. It has given me and my dog a reliable way to effectively communicate when he's doing something I don't want him to do. He knows right away what I mean when I "SHHH!" him.

Overall, there is a lot of good stuff in this book, but it's not perfect.

Learned so much! Not only do this insight work with my dogs, but I've also successfully implemented them in other areas of my life! Thank you Cesar!

A great primer on dog psychology

Cesar Millan guides you on a journey of development, from young aspiring Hollywood dog trainer to middle-aged master of dog psychology. Along the way, we ourselves learn. We learn what our dogs need to be balanced and fulfilled. We learn how and when to give affection and why it matters. We learn how to "master the walk." We learn how to be better pack leaders. That's good for both us and our dogs.

Great advice.

The beginning of the book was a bit boring talking about his life, but then the last 3/4 of the book was very interesting. I learned a lot about my own dog that I never thought about before.

If only I'd read it earlier...

As the owner of two Shelties who just turned a year old, I wish my wife and I had listened to this book a long time ago. Though we've tried to do everything right, it now seems that we've (okay, I've) done just about everything wrong. This is a great book to listen to BEFORE you bring that puppy home. Now, having said that, we are applying Cesar's lessons to our two dogs with great results. It's just a shame we're having to unlearn them of all the bad things before getting the full benefit of Cesar's ways.
