These are the words or sayings (Apophthegmata), of various monks (the abbas, i.e. fathers) who lived in the deserts of Egypt between 250 A.D. and 400 A.D. They cover topics such as love, poverty, fasting, humility, and prayer, and there is usually a short story that gives the context of the sayings. These sayings are one of the few surviving records of the first monks such as St. Anthony the Great and St. Pachomius, who followed a strict way of life. Their sole aim was to draw closer to God through their labours.

Story
This classic work from Thomas à Kempis, author of The Imitation of Christ, is now available in English for the first time. It is a simple truth that, without the virtue of humility, we cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. It simply cannot be done. Just as pride is the root and source of all sin, so is humility, the foundational virtue in which all other virtues must be grounded if they are to bear fruit. Humility is the heartbeat of the saints. It is the virtue that conforms us most closely to Christ.

Story
At the center of The Dark Night of the Soul (La noche oscura del alma) is a poem written by the 16th century Spanish poet and mystic St John of the Cross. Consisting of eight stanzas, each of five lines, the poem outlines the journey in pursuit of divine union, within which the only source of light comes from the soul. This recording in English includes the poem itself and St John's two accompanying treatises (1584-1585), essentially commentaries, which offer line-by-line explanations of the poem. Many modern listeners have found guidance and consolation in this work.

Then, drawing from Gospels and the greatest Christian contemplatives, he shows you what it means to be spiritually awake. You will learn why your ego resists change and growth, what is useful about popular ideas such as the law of attraction, what Jesus, the first mythical leader in the West, can teach you.

Best Centering Prayer Information available
This book has filled so much open space in my knowledge of Centering Prayer. Having met Father Keating in 1987 and having read his fascinating informative and inspiring books as well as practiced Centering Prayer ever since. This new look at the topic is like fresh air in its different approach! It is written so lovingly and with such depth of understanding and background on this source of Contemplative prayer in the Christian tradition, I feel nourished by all the hitherto unknown information. The exact method is discribed for beginners and those familiar to this ancient prayer form.
I have recommended this reading [ and now the hard copy book ] to my entire group of friends both Christian and non Christian.
There are really no words for the spiritual value of Basil Pennington's work.

A beneficial once over
Some very informative topics brought to my attention. Thankful to be able to add them to my memory bank, and will be putting them in to practice. Some of the information brought forth was, I feel, just the same ancient old practices expressed & passed on to fit a different culture, religion & the guidelines there of. Good for both the beginner & well practiced alike. However, being one that consumes a lot of like material & holds on to what would be in my opinion, great reads, this one I would find easy to pass along. Good for a once over tho. I would say 3.5 stars overall.
