What the Critics Say

"Like a gossipy girlfriend, McCarthy brings you in and makes you laugh; there's a certain comfort in knowing that even a sex symbol gets stretch marks and balloons to 200 pounds during pregnancy. A must-have for any childbirth collection." (Booklist)

    "Humorous, Light and Educational"

I was skeptical when I bought this book but I was pleasantly surprised. Jenny McCarthy is funny and I needed a funny book. The other pregnancy books I read left me nervous about having a child but this book took all of the fear away although she is very detailed with the pregnancy process. Jenny's humorous approach helped me not have fear and see things in a lighter and more manageable way. Plus the narrator is good too so it was a pleasant read.

    Great book.

    "Belly Laughs"

One thing that really bothers me about celebrity 'biography' type books is when they do not narrate the book themselves. I mean really? I listened to another of Jenny McCarthy's books - that she did not narrate - and was very disappointed. The only reason I purchased this one is because I'm pregnant and a girlfriend of mine recommended it. It has some honest truths about pregnancy that you may not find in other books, but I found the narrator obnoxious.

    "Surprisingly good"

Thinking of Jenny McCarthy I didn't expect much out of this book but gave it a try anyhow and as it turned out this was one of the better pregnancy books that I have listened to. And while I wish Jenny McCarthy would have narrated this book then again maybe it's good that she didn't as she can be pretty annoying.

    "No laughs in my belly"
What disappointed you about Belly Laughs?

It wasn't funny at all. I'd heard that it was funny, being a mother of two I looked forward to reading these. The narrator was ALL wrong.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Sheryl Sandberg's book

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She was way way too serious, wrong voice. Lacked humor and had a way of emphasizing what was supposed to be humorous so the listener would laugh. She failed. Miserably.

What character would you cut from Belly Laughs?

The narrator is probably all that should be cut.

    Any additional comments?

GET RID OF THAT NARRATOR!!!!!! Jenny McCarthy should have read it herself.

    "Funny!"

I laughed and cried but mostly laughed. I love all of her books. She doesn't hold back on anything. She tells you the truth whether you like it or not. I love the whole "Laugh" series.

    "loved it!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Belly Laughs to be better than the print version?

I loved the audio version of this book! It only could have been better if Jenny McCarthy read it herself!

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved getting to know Jenny McCarthy through this book. It make the book warm personable and comforting for another pregnant girl!

What about Gabrielle de Cuir’s performance did you like?

De Cuir did a great job reading McCarthy's book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Loved so many parts in it and all the comfort and comedic relief that pregnancy often needs!

    Any additional comments?

I would recommend it to any one not feeling perfectly at peace about all the uncertainties of pregnancy.

    "My first baby book"
Where does Belly Laughs rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is the first baby book that I have looked into. Very truthful and funny. I don't like the ones that read like text books. besides, I have heard a lot of the do's and don'ts from all my mommy friends.
If you are looking for a baby text book, then this is not for you. If you like a silly but true look at pregnancy then get this book! it is too cute, I loved it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes, I could not stop listening. I was hooked.

"would have been better with McCarthy narrating..."
Where does Belly Laughs rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

one of the funniest pregnancy book I have listened too

How could the performance have been better?

Would have loved to have heard Jenny MaCarthy narrate, I didn't even check when I purchased the book and was disappointed when it started.
But I have to say the narrator was by no means bad it was just strange when you were expecting something else

    "HI-larious!!!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Belly Laughs to be better than the print version?

Well, I never read the print version but I don't think I missed anything. The narrator was magnificent. The structure was stimulating. Her charming portrayal of some of the more horrific experiences of the pregnant truly puts an expecting mother at ease

What was one of the most memorable moments of Belly Laughs?

The cheerfully appropriate use of literary device added a colour to the audio second to none. The most memorable for me would probably be "Niagara Flow" and "Psycho Chick". Jenny made it so easy for me to identify with the representation of her experiences even though I can't say that I've had it that rough

What does Gabrielle de Cuir bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

de Cuir brings splendorous colour to the anecdotes Jenny so expertly pens. Her tone is most appropriate to bring the shades and hues as the author puts forward her own experience in her own words for the world to have

What insight do you think you’ll apply from Belly Laughs?

Truthfully, most of what Jenny noted I've already been or had my fair share of day dreams and nightmares about their impending occurrence. All the same, it was absolutely refreshing to hear it put forward in such a humourous context
