This is my favorite book on Buddhism. Lama Surya Das presents the basics with humor and compassion, making the ideas accessible to everyone, regardless of spiritual background. I've listened to it several times and find it uplifting and motivating every time.
This was a fantastic book... I started listening to it and couldn't stop. I put on the head-phones went outside and listened to the tape and let my heart and soul follow.... Would recommend it to everyone!
Good reading (listening)-- Lama Surya Das is upbeat, and inspirational, but he is also very practically informative. He takes you to the seminal questions quickly and illustrates and clarifies with a rush of fresh breeze and a splash of light. Being from Brooklyn, he sounds really fun speaking of his Tibetan life. I developed a fondness for his approach. His other book on this site is excellent also. Some repitition but good repitition. I highy recommend this, especially if you can sit outside and listen to it.
Lama Surya Das provides a very accessible introduction to Buddhism, entertaining us with personal anecdotes along the way. His voice is very relaxing. After finishing the book, I was ready for more detail and more practical advice on daily practice.
This was the best introduction to Buddhism I've yet read or listened to. Lama Surya Das does a great job explaining in modern day terms and with straight talk the four noble truths and the noble eight-fold path to enlightenment. I've read several books regarding Buddhism now and by far, to me, this work has been the best. He has a unique and inspiring way of teaching. When it comes to the meditation practices his voice is very soothing. So much so that I'm looking for a guided meditation CD by this teacher. I look forward to reading more of this author's work.
Heavy Listener wtih a mutlitude of interests. Enjoys Sci-Fi, Science/Tech, Fiction, Christian, and Historical books.
This is an excellent book. No matter your religion this could be used to help many people. It's main goal is to help you become "de-stressed" and live life with a love for all rather than the fast paced, my way or the highway that many people have. It would be totally a pleasure to be able to totally be immersed in Lama Surya Das's world for just a day or two. I loved hearing this book. I've read it already and each time I sat down and would read some I would always step away more relaxed and calmer than when I started.
Lama Surya Das helps American listeners (readers) to truly identify with the predominantly Eastern traditions of Buddhism. Although his accent gets distracting (the author/narrator is from Long Island, FYI), he lets it be known that an American/Westerner, with American struggles, American strengths, and the daily life of an American is completely compatible with Buddha. For the most part I absolutely loved it. I went back several times to re-listen and write things down.
Wonderful insight and story of Buddha practice. If you are seeking to enter into Buddhism or if it is already part of your daily routine this book helps to see the path more clearly. Great, funny and insightful.
