CONCISE PROBLEM ANALYSIS. SOLUTIONS, NOT SO MUCH.

I really found this book to be very enlightening. It was written and read well. As it is not my first book on the subject, it was more reinforcing in nature, which was fine. It helped me articulate issues that I needed to convey to my therapist. The narrator did a great job, she made the book feel less technical and more humanistic, as it should be.

The format of the book as that each of the characteristics of ACOA's were concisely explored first. Then when we got to the section where she was to offer some ways to address the related issues. Well, it seemed she rehashed the explanation of the issues again.

But I see the problem with this. The bottom line is, all one can do is offer some generalized insight on how to address these issues. Overcoming them is a very daunting and personal challenge. So I don't fault her. I'll keep this as a reference and highly recommend it to others who are ACOA's. It's definitely ON POINT!

Finally

I had the book in print for years and it's dog-eared pages and highlighted text well, sometimes was really hard to put down and then pick up again. Hearing it was really amazing...so glad this is in audio finally. One AHA moment that I had was the patience or "now" factor...why I must do things or have things "now" this was something I didn't fully get from the written text. I wish all her titles on this topic were in audio.

The husband of an adult child of an alcoholic

This is a great book for any spouse to read that has a partner that was a child of an alcoholic. I now feel that I can understand my wife a lot better now...

Less problem more solution

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I get these kinds of books looking for solutions. I know the problem. I'd prefer more focus on getting better.

Could you see Adult Children of Alcoholics being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No

Great information Horribel narrator

I found the information in this audio book very helpful and informative but the narrator sounded almost robotic. Very hard to listen to at first but got past it.

Very informative!

Alcoholism and substance abuse is so prevalent in our society that every adult should read this book. So many people are so confused...and do not know why. This book clears a great amount of confusion.

Very interesting

Although I knew it existed, I somehow missed reading this book throughout the years - It really clarifies the behaviors of children of alcoholics and describes how they came to behave the way they do. It is descriptive and I found myself frequently shaking my head in agreement. Unfortunately, it doesn't offer any solutions to help quell the behaviors, but I can see why it has been such a popular book.

Life Saving

This book should be read by anyone who grew up in a home where alcohol was a factor in their childhood.

I learned and recognized many pattern I have too this very day that are all pretty much tied to growing up in an alcoholic family.

I believe that just knowing this is inherently valuable.

I'm taking the things that resonated with me and am working with a therapist to help me see how that knowledge can best be applied to my adult life.

I'm an advocate of mental health improvement and if you choose to buy this book, I truly hope it helps you in some meaningful way.
