Publisher's summary

Nightline anchor Dan Harris embarks on an unexpected, hilarious, and deeply skeptical odyssey through the strange worlds of spirituality and self-help, and discovers a way to get happier that is truly achievable.

After having a nationally televised panic attack on Good Morning America, Dan Harris knew he had to make some changes. A lifelong nonbeliever, he found himself on a bizarre adventure, involving a disgraced pastor, a mysterious self-help guru, and a gaggle of brain scientists. Eventually, Harris realized that the source of his problems was the very thing he always thought was his greatest asset: the incessant, insatiable voice in his head, which had both propelled him through the ranks of a hyper-competitive business and also led him to make the profoundly stupid decisions that provoked his on-air freak-out.

We all have a voice in our head. It's what has us losing our temper unnecessarily, checking our email compulsively, eating when we're not hungry, and fixating on the past and the future at the expense of the present. Most of us would assume we're stuck with this voice that there's nothing we can do to rein it in but Harris stumbled upon an effective way to do just that. It's a far cry from the miracle cures peddled by the self-help swamis he met; instead, it's something he always assumed to be either impossible or useless: meditation. After learning about research that suggests meditation can do everything from lower your blood pressure to essentially rewire your brain, Harris took a deep dive into the underreported world of CEOs, scientists, and even marines who are now using it for increased calm, focus, and happiness.

10% Happier takes listeners on a ride from the outer reaches of neuroscience to the inner sanctum of network news to the bizarre fringes of America's spiritual scene, and leaves them with a takeaway that could actually change their lives.

Editorial Review

"It’s rare that I’m completely absorbed by a work of nonfiction, but Dan Harris’s honest, self-deprecating, humorous, and helpful journey in 10% Happier captivated me. This is an excellent (and highly entertaining) listen for meditation skeptics and believers alike." —Katie O.., Audible Editor

Mindfully Entertaining

Listening to this book was a great journey for me to figure out the topic of meditation. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories and especially the candidness of how Dan viewed the subjects he interviewed and the teachings of Buddhism. After listening I am walking away with a well needed simplification of meditation and some of the Buddhism concepts.

Love Dan’s story and the passion he has for mediation

I came across Dan in a podcast and decided to check his podcast out after the first one knew I wanted to hear more about his journey and story. I appreciate how he is on a mission to share what he has found. Can’t wait to listen to his next book.

Great book

I first chose to read the book and after some time I noticed that I didn’t have enough time to read the chapters due to them being to long for me to read at night. This was my first audible, I enjoyed the stories that were told. Overall it head funny stories, some very personal information that most people wouldn’t tell but that’s what makes the book great. I highly recommend it

He got me back into it!

This was a great book. Dan Harris of Good Morning America takes you along his journey of discovery of meditation. Insightful, often funny, this book is a well written memoir and spiritual autobiography and handbook all wrapped in one. If you ever had an inkling about meditation, here's an excellent place to start.

Good book. little long on the back story

It took a while to get rolling but for me it answered a lot of my questions about meditation and how to balance it with everyday life.
I found it incredibly useful and helpful. By the end of the book I was throughly engaged

Mindfulness without bullshit

Like the author, I have long been skeptical of meditation. When I’ve heard about it from practicing fans, the gushy, ultra-calm tones have always sounded like someone sliding into a cult. As Dan says in the book, it triggered my mental gag reflex.

Dan fixes this. This is a book for guys like me who have entirely too much skepticism about a LOT of things. I’ve stuck a toe in the meditation waters thanks to Dan, and so far I don’t think I’m losing my grip on reality. And it’s helping a little sometimes. I may not be to +10% happier yet, but I may just get there. Thanks, Dan!
