Emotional and heartbreaking

Seeker of Truth

…how true that title is. And depending on which truth you seek, you need to be careful it’s a truth you really want to know, because it might change everything you thought you knew. This book is more heart-breaking than the previous ones. My heart ached for John. He lost his parents, or the people that he thought was his parents, and that’s hard enough. But finding out that you might not be you, that… I can’t even begin to guess how horrible that must be.

After finding out that his past was a lie, John and his kind of but not really, cousin Ryan along with Night set out to find out the truth about John’s past. Who he was and what happened to him. But also to find out what happened to the real John. At the same time Caleb, Gray and Zahira are tasked to investigate mysterious deaths in New Orleans. As usual things aren’t always what they might seem, and it’s up to the teams to try to get to the truths lurking underneath.

Our trio are separated for most of the book while they are investigating different cases. For John’s sake I wished Caleb and Gray was there with him, to support him while exploring memories of the past. So many horrible and heartbreaking memories, so many questions. I don’t know where Hawk gets his ideas, but I know a few things when I pick up a book of his; I won’t know where he’ll lead me until I’m there and he sure doesn’t hesitate to put his characters through hell.

Brad Langer once again showed us why he’s the one narrating the books set in the SPECTR universe. He has so many different voices that reflect the individual characters. I do believe his personation of Gray is the most fitting. The deep and raspy voice and slow speech patterns really fits him, as does the lack of emotion and intonation – well except when John is threatened, then the emotions are overflowing. Langer also made you feel John’s confusion, his hurt and sadness while sorting through memories; old and new. It made for a rough listen every now and then. But it was worth it.

I don’t know where Hawk will lead us next, but I dare say neither John, Caleb nor Gray will come out of it unscathed. Only time will tell.

Loved it!

Great book in a great series! Highly recommend. I can’t imagine a better narrator for Gray.
